Summer internships during pre-med

Hi pre-med parents,

My son will start attending Duke this fall and plans to be a pre-med, possibly majoring in neuroscience. We are in SF bay area. He did an internship two years ago at a local hospital for a research project 2 years ago (pre-covid, in-person) which took most of the summer, leaving only 2 weeks idle. Since it was local, it worked out fine. I’m wondering once he goes to college, how internships will work assuming thigs will be back to normal and internships will be in-person again? Will it be easier to arrange an internship through his college or local? Is it a possibility that he’ll spend his summers mostly at North Carolina?

Even if where you are and where your child goes to college are different, can you share your experiences about your child’s summer internships? Do they have to do an internship every summer? I’m trying to get some insight into this topic. Thank you so much for any input.

I can only give you our personal experience. My guy spent 3 of his summers at his college doing research and one at a college on the other coast doing research. All were paid. His last summer before med school he asked if he could come home to give himself a break or if we thought he should get a job. We told him to come home and enjoy himself. He did work a little while at home, but doing things he loved (in his case, teaching juggling) so it was more fun than work.

We always let him decide what he wanted to do. He lined up the things at his college and applied for/was accepted to the highly competitive one on the other coast.

My son attends a summer camp in TX for kids with Type 1 Diabetes and the counselors are almost all premed students!
