I'm trying to decide whether it's more worthwhile to take a summer job or to take a few summer courses at the local community college (I'm in California).

One of the things that I've been deliberating is whether a university that I'm trying to transfer to (let's say a top 30 university in the US) will look more favorably upon 2-3 summer courses taken, or if it taking a job as a server (waiter) would be of equal or greater value.

The place I would be working at is actually owned by UCLA, and it is not easy work at all... but realistically I can't imagine it'd be seen as any different from working at a usual restaurant.

I'm hoping somebody will have some advice based on how they see working v.s. taking summer classes. I know nobody will really know what admissions officials think, but it's good to hear opinions other than my own and of those closest to me - especially from any adults on CC with more life experience.

Furthermore, it seems that this is important for any freshman/ sophomore in college that is making the choice between extra cash for the school year or getting some classes out of the way... I can imagine that juniors/ seniors would be generally best off taking internships that correlate with their majors.

I’m doing both as well, it’s not as hard as you imagine.

I’m taking 16 hours of intensive classes a week, working for 20 hours at my first job, and 8 hours at my second job, plus spending countless hours with extra-curriculars. Colleges take everything into account!

Okay sorry I was trying to make it a general topic useful in a broad way for people trying to make the decision for themselves…

I personally already have a job that I’m working 20 hours a week, and have 21 hours of class a week, along with EC’s and fun. When summer comes I need to decide between keeping up the class load and EC’s (same boards and clubs keep going over summer).

or

lesson the amount of hours I work at my current job (to 10 hours a week), and work 40 hours a week at another job.

It’s not an issue of being too hard or a possibility of doing both, either way I’m going to have a job… I really meant the choice between taking classes, or taking up a second, full time job… which is what I said in my original post.

There is no way to do both the Full time job and the classes, so I was really hoping to get somebody’s opinion on a job v.s. extra classes.

And yeah, Jocelyne, the units I would get out of the way would be more GE/ Lower Division classes needed for my major either at my current school or a target transfer school :). Thanks
