Looking to Transfer To a University From a Community College? Ask Me How I Did It!

I'm about to start as a Junior at UCLA. I started my school career two years ago with no money in a savings account, little knowledge about writing an essay and having no idea what I was gonna major in.

So maybe my experience can help you somehow. Ask me any questions about community colleges, classes, housing, extracurricular activities, being a working student, scholarships, transferring and so on and on- I will do my best to answer.

Congratulations on your admittance to UCLA! Are you taking summer courses?

Thank you!

I will not be taking any summer courses for both reasons. I did too much these past 2 years and really need a break- and also, I need to work and save up for the Fall.

However I am taking a recreational class at UCLA which is not graded or included in any transcripts.

Are you transferring? Transferred? Thinking about it?

What’s your major?

Political Science.

I should mention that I started my freshman year as an English major and then switched at the beginning of my sophomore year.

I will be transferring to Berkeley next semester. I was curious whether you decided to take summer courses or not. By the way, I am also a Political Science major!

and stats. :D

How’s UCLA weather?

What school are you going to?

About taking a summer session- one should do it only if required. Full-time students do need a break, why not take it.

I was taking courses at Evergreen Valley College. To complete two Political Science prerequisite, I decided to live in Los Angeles for the summer to take those two Political Science courses at Santa Monica College before I transfer to Cal. I am actually still new to this city; however, I hope to make the best out of it!

What about you?

and stats? UCLA weather is gloomy right now. Lots of people around specially because a lot of people from around the world do their study abroad this semester (Summer).

I’m in a recreational class where I’ve already met people from Australia, Spain and Germany.

@External: Cal- congrats! I went to SMC so I’ve been in LA for a while. Moving to Westwood soon.

@matchcutto
I was connecting my post to JamesGold’s post…but oh well.

What are your stats?

@iZychr: Oh my bad! I missed that one.

Attending: UCLA

Let me know if I let something out that you’d want to know.

Sounds good! I am currently living in Westwood. Have a great time at UCLA!

@External: Same to you at Cal. Make sure not to miss CalSO… I heard you can get pretty lost if you don’t.

And if you’re an outdoors person- take a trip to the Muir Woods, you won’t regret it :)

Actually, considering that I am living in Los Angeles, I am unable to attend a CalSO session due to the lack of transportation. In a way, I actually regret taking courses over the summer in a different city. It would had been a lot convenient if my prerequisites were offered at my local community college.

@External: Okay, stuff happens. Make sure you contact counselors so you understand basic stuff about your major.

The reason why CalSO is so important, it’s simply because of information. It’s the one day where the school gets all prepared to tell you what they can offer you. But all of this stuff you can probably still find online and asking the right questions to the right people.

Don’t regret it. SMC is a good school and LA is a lot different from Berkeley so they environment change might do you go. There’s also a lot of people from SMC that will be going to Berkeley next semester and you might meet them here. Who knows.

It would definitely be nice to meet new people at Santa Monica College; although, it may be difficult due to the fact that there are no club and campus events. Did you attend your orientation for UCLA?

I have a question–scholarships! do you know of any? I’ve been trying like crazy to find some and I’ve had noo luck. (I’m going to UCLA too =])

I’m surprised you were rejected at CAL @_@

So you’re taking a non credit class at UCLA right? How much are you paying for tuition? Housing?
