Summer Jobs

Whats the traditional or recommended activities for summer time in college? I understand a simple job would be good after freshman year as you still don't have any real career skills from college, an internship is good after junior year when you have some skills under your belt, but what do you do between sophomore and junior year? And am I accurate in my understanding so far?

Jobs and internships are good options for summers between your sophomore and junior year. You could also take summer classes to lighten your course load during the school year. Also, volunteering with organizations that support a cause that is of interest to you is a great way to gain experience and to give back to your community.

Try to get an internship as early as possible after starting college. There are internships for students even after they only finish their first years. So find an internship if you can in the summer between your sophomore and junior year. The second choice will be a summer job. Any working experience will help you in your future job applications.

There’s no standard summer activities list that college students abide by. Some take classes, study abroad, do internships, or even just go home and find a part-time job. It really depends on what ever you’d like to do.

I just finished my first year and am currently on an internship. Next summer, I’d like to be a camp counselor in another state. The summer after that, who knows? The point is, just do what ever you want to do. If, after your first year, you’d like to just take it easy, then do that. Just because you’re a freshman doesn’t mean you won’t get an internship; there are many people who can attest to that, myself included! Don’t let “traditional or recommended” advice hold you back.
