Summer Music Festivals 2022

My S is getting his application done now, seems the perfect program for him. Hope things are in person!

My daughter attended college program at Brevard for 3 summers and LOVED it. Food just OK, and some of the cabins can be musty, and bugs are large. That aside, it is an absolutely fantastic program!

My daughter went to Brevard and Green Mountain. Both were fabulous classical experiences. Brevard is intensive and fast-paced orchestral and Green Mt. allows for careful attention to 1 or 2 chamber pieces.
Does anyone know anything about Bang on a Can Summer Festival? It’s new classical music…very cutting edge/experimental. Just wondering if anyone knows someone who has attended! Thanks for any info.

Thank you for introducing me to the Bang on a Can Festival. It looks like an extremely unique, high-level, and exciting program. I listened to a number of the alumni works and their stuff is fabulous. Looks like it’s only open to musicians who are also composers, and you must be 21 yo. Definitely something to aspire to and such a phenomenal opportunity for those who qualify!

I know many performers who’ve attended Bang on a Can who are not composers. To a one everyone I know who has attended loved it and found it one of the most important moments in their musical life.

I’m trying to stay out of the process, but my daughter is applying to a few summer programs, of which I only know one so far (Bowdoin). I guess we’ll see how things go. I hope to hear more about what she decided. I don’t know how competitive these programs are and DD is trying not to expect too much (with only the few she is applying to). How competitive are these usually? DD is at an LAC (Luther College) which she has loved, and is a vocal and cello double concentration music major. Happy January!

I believe she is applying for cello!

Anyone here had experience with the Blackburn Music festival in Napa valley?

I came across this festival info today, never heard of it, it looks very interesting. Unfortunately, it is 18 years and up, so D23 will not be applying. It is free and managed by the Frost School of Music faculty members. January 31st is a deadline to apply.

Hopefully it would be a fit for some of you or your kiddos. Good luck!

Thank you for sharing, @RussianMom! One of the many reasons I love this group! The music world is tough enough. I appreciate how this group looks out for, advises, and aides up-and-coming musicians!

Anyone heard from NYO USA? Zi suspense!!! Emails are usually sent around 11.30 am.

Ah, “no” for my D23 flutist, but a couple of her ‘22 friends got in! How exciting! Hope they got to go to Berlin this summer!

Congrats to all accepted!

Every time someone posts on this thread I get more anxiety about my S24 changing his plans! So exciting that results are starting to come out.

My D22 got a ‘no’ as well from NYO - can’t say that I am very surprised as she did it all so last minute (like literal last minute). I hope that others have better results - I’ve got my fingers crossed for your kids

Did you wind up finding any more programs for her? My S24 flutist is leaning towards more camp type experience after a lot of changes of minds.

We are still waiting to hear from several festivals, she enjoyed EMF last year, it was one of the very few in person in 2021, and they offered a lot of performance opportunities, including chamber and solo, but it was majority college students. Greensboro is close to ATL, so we drove over for her concerts several times.

Not a lot of programs for younger musicians, especially for woodwinds and brass players. Check out these ones for your son, they seem to fit his camp criteria, and faculty is superb:

And there is always Interlochen.

Good luck!

Yeah it is hard, he is working on Greenwood and Kinhaven after a lot of prompting on this page! We looked at Interlochen so many times and keep thinking it has too many clicks in the no to go for, sigh!
Good luck to your daughter!

what instrument does your S play? My D has been to both Greenwood/Kinhaven. Both are wonderful!

This may be too far geographically, but Idyllwild Arts (southern CA mountains) has a good reputation for HS chamber intensive.

Curious if you have insights about festivals for college-aged composers. We have a list here of quite a few but not much context for them. How fruitful and enjoyable are they? From a practical perspective, how competitive are they? Is it appropriate to apply to more than one? (I would imagine organizers might not be happy to be turned down). TIA for any advice.

@composermom has an interesting question. I would guess that most people apply to multiple programs since there is no guarantee of acceptance. That is why they have wait lists. Anyone else have insight?
