Seeing as though I'm like 60% through orientation training, I figure I should open myself to any orientation questions you have. Although I'll be working with your parents this summer, the student OLs and I are doing the same things...so if there is anything I can help you all with...let me know. Also, we're getting fairly in-depth briefings on a LOT of university units (offices like the Office of International Programs, Housing, UHS etc)...so I'm learning a lot of wonderful and interesting things.

I will give you one piece of advice straight up...it is HOT in East Quad.

ouch...no questions eh...well...if anything comes up feel free to PM or IM me...I'd be more than happy to be a resouce for you guys as orientation approaches...

The International Office (I don't remember if that's what it's called, but it's in E. Quad), will they help me plan a trek across Europe? They have plenty of information there, but will they sit down and guide me through the process?

Thanks for making this thread. I'm supposed be at orientation next week. I haven't received my packet in the mail though. Here's some questions for you:

Am I sleeping in a room with 2 other orientation students or regular students?

Will I have a space to park my car?

You stay with 2 other orientation students. Last year it seemed like they tried to mix you with people from different backgrounds (my room had 1 LSA honors from michigan, and engineer from michigan, and LSA from california, and most other people I talked to said theirs was similar).

As far as parking, I think your orientation packet should include some kind of information about parking. The closest lot is near the corner of South University and Church Street (kinda kitty corner from East Quad to the northeast), and from what I can remember from last year, you get a special tag and you can park there for all of orientation for something like $7 a day.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that the room placements are COMPLETELY random, considering that they don't take those things into account when they do that ACTUAL housing decisions. But I'm happy you all had a diverse living situation :-).

Sonar...I'm not sure what you are talking about exactly. Are you referring to the Office of International Programs (OIP) or maybe the International Institute? At any rate, there is no "international office" that has offices in EQ, so I'm doubly confused lol. For what purpose do you want to trek across europe...if its educational I'd recommend getting in touch w/ the Int. Institute to see what's available. If its recreational, I'd check out a travel agency.

Yeah...I wouldn't waste time researching profs for Eng 125 and Calc. Most of your "learning" will be done in discussion and lab sections (for calc). Honestly, I don't worry so much about who will be teaching a course...its the GSI that really matters a lot of the time, and those you probably won't know by the June Orientation.

Yes to the last 2 questions. Intl' student orientation is in the fall, and it is scheduled so that students do not have to go back to thier home country before starting UM.

You need to bring whatever you'd like to sleep on (sleeping back, sheets etc). Also, don't forget towels and other tolietries. EQ isn't a hotel all!

Laptop is unnecessary. You'll be spending your free time socializing, and there are computer labs/libraries available for any computing needs you may have.
