Do people typically bring their parents to this? Mine not be available so I'd like to know in case it was weird or something...

no…

theres a separate “family orientation” if they’re that interested

Orientation with parents would be weird or something…

No…summer orientation is meant to be WITHOUT your parents. there’s a parents’ orientation on the last day of your summer orientation, but it’s separate from your last day activities.

having your mom at orientation with you would be a rough start.

We traveled to UCLA with our daughter for orientation but did our own thing elsewhere for the first two days and stayed with family in the area at night. Our daughter stayed in the dorms and did all the activities without us, as it is meant to be. Parents do have a full day orientation the last day (third day) which was fun and very informative and then we met up with our daughter at the end of the last day. If you parents can go, great, as they will enjoy it and learn more about UCLA. But it is not necessary and you do not do any activities with your parents.

Parent orientation is free?

Parent orientation is not free. I don’t remember the exact amount but I think ( but really am not sure) that it was $60 a person. That included breakfast, lunch, varous speakers, seminars and tour. I would highly recommend both or at leaset one parent attend parent orientation. As a parent, I was impressed and reassured after attending. UCLA is so big and it made me realize again what a great school it is and that they really have it together.
