Has anyone's parents attended family orientation in the first 2 sessions, and if so can you provide some input?

my family went to the parent orientation. basically there’s a bunch of little info sessions for your parents to attend if they’re intersted in more ways of being involved with their child’s education. i know that my mom went and she went to these little workshops on different programs ucla provides students. my little sisters who were like under 18 got placed with the kids’ orientation where they went to tour around the campus and painted and hung out with ucla orientation people.

yah at the end they get this really big tour, but my sisters found it boring with the kids since they were all smaller kids, like 10 years and younger. but my parents liked it…so i hope it helps?? :D

jinobi, this is a request from my mom: can you ask your mom if she thinks, after she attended workshops, that she is better equipped to help you out with questions related to academics ?

no, my mom keeps nagging me now.

(besides, you should be responsible for your own academics. parents orientation is more for self-knowledge for the parent.)

Jinobi-correct about the mom and spot on about the parenthesis

Dude, I know that and I would’nt have it any other way. Besides i said that it was a question from my mom you know how parents are. Just wondering, you guys never had to ask your parents for help for anything? Just because you ask for advice does not mean that you are not responsible! I was just curious about how ademate both of you were.

in terms of academic help, you should be asking fellow students, counselors, advisers, Google, etc.

your mom will not have enough knowledge to help you with most academic concerns just by going to a one-day orientation. you asked about asking your parents for “questions related to academics.” i still ask my parents about general life advice and big events happening in my life, but i don’t ask her about UCLA-pertinent academic advice; she’s not the one attending UCLA, I am.

sheep55-Are you asking if parents attended the new student academic workshops instead of the parent workshops?

the biggest plus to parent orientation was meeting the deans and administrators, imo. There were resources shared that were helpful later, but not re: academics, more about health safety, res life, insurance, etc.

theocmom, thank you for answering “my mom’s” question in such a sensible and factual manner. You have been very helpful!
