summer orientation

so who's going when?

Couldn't do session 1 because of graduation,
session two was already filled
so we got into session 3

Dad and daughter will be attending tomorrow's session. We're psyched!

what part of NY you from j2b2?

North of Syracuse. You?

How was orientation? Any information as to "wish I would have known that before I got here" We go next week.

What kind of information did you wish you knew before you go? I went two years ago and I thought it was very good and informative. FYI, I recommend that you buy the Laptop from Loyola because they won't support laptop not purchased from them. My daughter is now a Junior at Loyola so let me know any questions that you have heading to Orientation. They are very open and very helpful.

nothing in particular, just sometimes people find out things that if they would have known, it could have streamlined the visit.

I feel that very little info was given to prepare for orientation regarding scheduling. I found the course catelog on the web site (not an easy site to get around and we worked up a few possible schedules for classes)

Also found alot of areas on the site that the information has not been updated for quite awhile so I don't feel it may provide accurate information. (I found something on honor housing that gave a location that was renamed back in 2002)

The laptop brochure is the same one as previously listed (last year?). the prices seem outrageous compared to what you can buy direct from Lenovo. And I don't see anywhere on the site that they support personal computers, only the schools. Some where the site states they can provide a name that will fix your your personal computer if you have a problem. It also states :

If purchased thru the book store
"Software and connectivity support will be available through the College’s Technology Service Center. All hardware warranty support will be handled directly with Lenovo."

Only 1 g Ram with Vista and an 80 G hard drive for $1,200 seems pretty pricey to me. (this concerns me as everyone I have spoken to states that you need a minimum of 2G to run Vista) In checking the Lenovo site, I am not so sure a better deal can't be had.

I think we will probably wait till next semester and see just what my D will need. She will just have to make do with what she has now. Want to also see how the HP computer grant for the science department works out and what they will be getting and using.

Do you know anything about the health center ? Because we are from out of state and on an HMO, My daughter will be going on a special plan within our HMO, so I need to find out if they will accept her copay and then bill the insurance company or if they will require a payment in full. To pick up the college Aetna plan at $1800 is just too costly. (we are normally a very healthy family so hopefully this will be a none issue) Most of the other schools we were looking at only charged $100 - $300. for the heath plan.

Thank you though for your offer to provide info, It is nice to have a support base of parents and students that are already there.

PS. Did you D get a laptop from the store and did she ever need to use tech support?

So I went on the Levono web site and configured what the store is offering and the difference in price was $214. more at Loyola but it included the Adobe DIgital School collection that is only available thu a School purchase (not as a student) the cost is listed at $170.

http://www.adobe.com/education/pdf/adsc/adsc_ds.pdf for details.

so I guess if you do truely get tech support, it is worth spending the extra and going thru the bookstore. But I would hope that you could upgrade to
2 gig ($55. per Lenovo site) since tech support also recommends this in another area of their site.

To clear up the first confusion. Your daughter will be given her schedule when she meets with her advisorrobably on the morning of the second day of Orientation. It will be based on what is available and whatever courses she picked or need s for her major. She starts doing her own schedule in the second semester. This is the way most if not all schools do it.

I am from Maryland so my HMO didn't need to be adjusted so I would directly ask them about your concerns when you get there. They should have a Health booth there.

As for the laptop, two years ago we ordered it online at the Computer Dept website, I don't remember the Bookstore being involved at all. They will have a booth about this.

Orientation is more about tying up loose ends and answering questions. You will be separated from your daughter for most of the time so that each group can go over issues that concern themselves. Parents will learn about how the bill is paid, talk with current parents, and have other sessions of parent interest. There will be a separate dinner and happy hour etc. The students will get campus tours, attend group discussions on student issues like drinking, roommates, adjusting to college and not living at home, meet with their advisor, do the Roommate survey, and other social activities.

Overall, I thought it was well done and much better than the one at Towson which was only for students and excluded the parents completely.

Both of you should be ready to go when you head back home but you may have some new questions come up which you can get answeres here or at Loyola.

Thanks so much!
