I can see that while some people get off on failure and scandal, still others get off on just plain embarrassing themselves.

For those who want to talk about something else, there's this thread. I know I called it summer plans, we could talk about those or we could talk about anything. What are you guys doing this summer? I've never met anyone who isn't excited about summer.

I'm going to be in California for three months, I stayed on campus last summer it was fun but a change is definitely in order. I dunno. GO AT IT

Freshman son is coming home to do a summer internship with a computer software company! And even tho he is not majoring in computers, this is truly his passion and he is very excited about it! We are wondering if this job op might offer the insight to change his major??? His only other FUN plans include catching up with HS friends as many are away at different colleges.

Sounds like you all have some great internships lined up for the summer. As a parent I would be curious how you went about selecting your internship and what you feel helped you in the decision making process. Any classes that you took? Discovery of a new passion?

My DD is making final summer internship right now (should have sent a letter to someone today if not last night!) .

Thanks for changing the subject Pebbles. :-)

Son has always had a passion for computers--went to two summer programs at Universities where he learned different programming languages. It was for fun--which is why I think he learned so much--no grades! But, it has seriously become a hobby for him as he later taught himself more about the computer in HS since HS had a very limited tech dept. Anyway, I think the fact that he felt comfortable with the job--and he had to be interviewed by a team of 6 people and perform some tasks during the interview sold him on the internship. Plus, the fact that he will actually be doing a presentation for clients of the company interested him. And, while he says he is not in it for the money (HA!) it is paying a nice salary. The fact that he will be home after a freshman year also appealed to him as well--I think he needs a vacation from taking care of himself! Hope this answer isn't too off-topic and as I mentioned in an earlier post, we are now wondering if this internship is the impetus he needs to change his major???

Letter! Oh boy, all my internship offers were over phone or email. She musta been something else for them to waste postage on her :)

yeah i'm a physics major and i was between physics and aero/astro internships... I went with aero/astro in the end, I dunno. Being a research physicist for the rest of my life just doesn't compare to building spaceships :P Plus, the people were awesome, and I would have contacts both at MIT and over in Cali (joint project) so I can pick up on it during the school year.

notre dame AL- wait, if he's a freshman he doesn't have a major yet... right? I remember it was about the end of freshman year that you picked it... if you're going to change majors now is the time to do it!

international physics olympiad, and if that doesn't work out, maybe canada/usa mathcamp. or a job. i don't know. my chances at ipho this year are pretty good though. hopefully i won't have to resort to plan b.

Actually, he has declared aero as his major and has been told that having the intense computer background will be a plus. He explained that he was told that a lot of aero people have to send their stuff to computer people and if he can have a good ground in the computer aspect, it will help him up front. I apologize if this does not make sense--I really don't understand what all of this means. And, I don't want to hijack the thread! At any rate, the internship is bound to be an asset--whether he sticks with aero or not!

Sounds like those late nights of psetting (sp?) are paying off for all of you with these wonderful internships. :-)

Are all of the dorms open during the summer or do people have to move to a different dorm for the summer if they are doing a UROP?

For those that aren't freshmen I have a question. What was the biggest difference between freshman and sophomore year aside from the fact that you completed a year of MIT? Even though you had a more demanding schedule than freshman year did you feel better about it? Did you feel more focused? Things have changed so much since I attended college in the 70's!!! :-)

Oh, sorry hsmom, I'm still a HS junior... Sorry if this was supposed to be a way for MIT students to share what they're doing this summer. I thought it was just a general share-your-summer-plans thing.

Unless, of course, your first comment was only directed at LauraN (I couldn't figure out with the "you"), in which case you can just ignore this.
