summer program advantage

i know that people who went to top universities' summer programs have an awesome chance of going there for college. but what exactly are the stats on that? unfortunately, i didn't go to a stanford summer program...crazy expensive.

is there really that big of an advantage of going to a university's summer program? do more people that attend a summer program get into that respective college?

It really depends on what you do when you're there. I did Stanford programs two summers in a row. For me, they were more about the experience than about the prestige. The first summer was just a 3 week 3 unit thing on philosophy, and I just hung out. I did summer college this past summer, but I think that this summer looks really good for a variety of reasons:

1) success in my classes. one was 3 units of cultural psychology, but the other was the first part of the bio core, a 5 unit weeder class for premeds.
2) I taught a bhangra workshop that attracted students from the undergraduate summer research college
3) I did botany research
4) The director of the summer program knows me by name and likes me, which will be advantageous, since he comments on the people who went to summer college and then eventuall apply.
5) A class that I audited reaffirmed for me that I want to be a medical anthropologist, which was great for an essay

SO, I think you get the picture. You can just go and take classes and have fun, or you can actually do stuff like you would do in college.
But that's just one facet of any application. I mean, plenty of kids do programs that are just hosted on a college campus but aren't affiliated with the college and don't garner credit. Its just one of those things. You can do it, and if you do, it will probably help your application, but won't be THE deciding factor.

PS: I'm getting rejected or a deferral at best.

so he says...

Ashveer, may I take the liberty to say...you're a jerk!

Neemi, may I take the liberty to say that you don't know me, and to lash out like that shows no class.

lol why is he a jerk?

hahaha...spur of the moment...no class-->>>don't talk to me about class dude

yeah...I'm Ashveer and I'm perfect and I've done everything and Stanford already loves me...but..ya know I'm probably going to get rejected anyways...

perhaps jerk is not the right word...I'll have to think of a word that rings more "class"

I can talk to you about class if I want. I took the liberty.

Im not perfect, I just do things that I like. I wanted to relate my summer experience as an example of how you can can just attend a summer program, or make it worthwhile. I guess you skimmed over parts of what I wrote, because I stated, its just one facet of my application. You don't know if I got suspended, have a criminal record, have straight B's, low SAT's, a big nose, etc.

I don't see what is so perfect about what I did. I did nothing that I don't plan to do in college. Just stop being bitter. Keep on thinking.

Woah, this thread took a downwards dive...

:)

I for one would just like to say I wish I had a million billion dollars so I could go to expensive summer camps too. :(

A downward dive into petty name calling.

Shaina, a lot of summer programs offer finaid. I know someone who went to Stanford summer college for $200, and the full cost was like $8000.

frankly, I think Ashveer is funny. :p

OH yea, they give lots of aid... when I went to a summer prog, my dad thought asking for aid would decrease my chances, so he didn't ask for much. But Stanford still gave me all he asked for, which paid for more than half the cost. purty sweet =)

back to OP's question, hmmm... I'll say it depends on what type of camp you go to... I'm not sure Summer School and the like counts for much except you get to take a couple college classes early, but more selective programs probably have more say. Besides, if you go, you're prolly a pretty good applicant anyway. whatever, spending a month in Cali away from home beats any thing! jk mom...

I'm so happy someone gets me.

Hey corti, did you go to summer college?

nope. i'll wait until i'm actually in college to take college courses, there's no rush =)

What summer programs are we talking about here? I know about Stanford's math camp, the Qwest program, and "summer school".
What's "summer college"?

I think you may be confusing "summer school" and "summer college"

Summer college is the 8 week program where about 300 high school students live in lagunita court and take stanford classes for credit.
