NYU summer Pre-college application is now available online

HELP! My D is currently registered to attend 1st session of SDM summer program - she also wants to register for the NYU summer program for high school students - the dates just work out. However, in another thread, I believe Soozievt said that she knew of someone that had done the exact same thing, and due to some homework type assignments for the NYU program, it made it extremely hard to do this. I called NYU SP today, and the director wasn't very helpful on any information regarding this matter - he said that once accepted, NYU sent out very detailed information. All he could say was that he recommended my D continue on with voice, dance, drama training. DUH!!!

Has anyone done the NYU summer program through Tisch that could shed some light on this subject. THANKS

When I went to SDM 1st session, I met a girl who was going right into the program for film and TV. I dont recall her having to do anything. But if theres any homework, im sure your daughter could do it before she leaves for SD and you find out early enough about the program that any assignments she could even do before she gets out of school.

Just a few thoughts on summer programs. The 3 I kwow about are CMU, Walnut Hill and Summer Theatre Institute.

CMU summer program is very intensive 6 week program (my son attended). It was great for my son because they helped him work on his audition material selection and because of the hard work, he got a good sense of what a conservatory program was going to be like.

A good friend of ours has a D that went to Walmnut Hill and ended up getting a scholarship to attend the school. Their summer program was more performance based and less instruction.

The Summer Theatre Institute was a 4 week program located at Columbia in New York. My son attended after his Sophmore year. He had a great time in NY and got some great instruction from guest instructors in stage combat, movement, mime, etc. They have musical theatre and drama students. The women that runs the program is a very positive force and my S loved it. I think this program is better for younger students.

The type of program really depends on what you are looking for. CMU program offers the best training.

This had fallen WAY back on the pages and since it is that time of year when some people just get started thinking about Summer Programs, here is a Bump up...
PLEASE REMEMBER, this is JUST for listing vitals or links to programs, please see discussion thread for the "discussions"...

My son auditioned for CCY as an out of state musical theater student. He is currently a sophomore. He is looking for an intensive theater program. He is also considering Mason Gross at Rutgers and the Carnegie Mellon musical theater program for high school students. Any thoughts on how to choose between these three programs? Any experiences with any of these programs would be most helpful!

The Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University has a summer acting conservatory for high school students which runs from July2nd to July 30th.

Sylvie, I think that a lot of the students who planned to attend CMU's precollege program have already applied and some have even gotten their acceptances. I am told (by people on this list) that getting into that program is mostly a matter of getting your application in early, when there is still room. So you might want to check to make sure they haven't filled their quota for the summer before sending the application in. Of course, don't take my word for it: I am just repeating what I have heard here.

sylvie,
I attended CCY last summer for musical theatre--it was the best summer of my life. I am still in touch with almost everyone I met there, and I wish every day was like a CCY day. The RA's are great, the Wes campus is gorgeous, facilities are tremendous. The MT staff is outstanding. The choreographer changes year-to-year, I think, but the musical director, Ethan Nash, has an outstanding voice, great tips on how to better your voice & confidence, and has a great sense of humor. The director is Carolyn Kirsh--she was in the original b'way cast of "A Chorus Line". Chances are, if your S auditioned at Wesleyan, he auditioned for her. She is amazing. They really stress the acting portion of the program, and while the final piece is pretty much all singing & dancing, she teaches you how to effectively act a song.

There's so much more I could write here praising the program. It made me SO much more confident in my auditioning skills and my life in general (I know, classic advert. material-whoops)

PM me with any specific questions--i would love to answer any questions you or your S may have.

~Bkstg_Mt~

Hello NotMamaRose,

Thanks for the heads up re:CMU. I called them today and they said they are not filled up, and are still accepting applications for the theater program.

We are still on the fence about whether to apply there because of the very positive experience at CCY, but we won't hear from Wesleyan until sometime in April. My S was designated an alternate with NYSSSA, which leaves him in limbo re: NY.

It seems to be necessary to have more than one application out there in order not to be scrambling for summer programs in June. Fortunately, a lot of the application materials overlap, and CMU doesn't require an audition.

Hello bkstg_mt,

Thank you for your thoughtful insights re:CCY. I believe Ethan and Carolyn conducted the auditions, and my S felt they were insightful and energetic teachers. We came away from our morning there feeling very positive about the program, the setting, and the people.

We have some other questions and will be pm'ing you once I figure out how to do that on this site!
