Has anyone been to asummer program/course at Northwestern University throughthe Center for Talent Development such as Equinox or Specturm or have a child who has gone there? If so what is your opinion on that camp such as the academic strength or it, the teachers, the food, the dorms, the extra curricular activities, ect.

I’ve known many students who have attended the summer and school year programs. They’ve all given rave reviews and several have attended more than one summer. The children reported the academics to be both challenging and rewarding.

My daughter attended the summer before 9th grade, took psychology for 3 weeks with an excellent teacher and TA, reviewed for the AP test the next school year and scored a 5. There were no other 5s in psychology at her school and no 5s in any APs taken by any other 9th graders. She had a great time and it opened her eyes to the level of giftedness that exists far beyond her community. It was well worth the $.

My kids have gone through Apogee, Spectrum and Equinox. S attended 5 summers there and D attended 2 summers. They loved the taste of independence and the feel of living on a college campus. We were favorably impressed by the teachers. Don’t do it thinking it will give a boost in college admissions (though S is going to NU) but if you have the money and the courses offered are of interest, why not?

My kid qualified, but we were put off by the cost. D2 has attended Davidson’s THINK instead for two summers, which she has loved. It isn’t cheap, but less than the CTD programs we looked at (I think Davidson Institute subsidizes the cost somewhat). Just an alternative to consider if your kid has very strong scores.

A friend’s D attended. My son chose the WCATY programs in Wisconsin but we did attend an awards ceremony event there for his high test scores one year. The girl who attended seemed to have done well with it per her mother, this was several years ago. If it is affordable go for it. Spending time with other gifted kids is well worth it, although they come home thinking parents are morons (how do they think they got their intelligence? Nature and nuture from home are not thought of). Evanston is Northwestern’s campus location, small enough, near the lake and far from Chicago’s big city vibe. Don’t worry.

It’s dope. Attended the data science course and had soooooo much fun. Outside of class the camp is super duper fun and exciting, you can walk anywhere on campus with your friends. Play frisbee, go to the bookstore, go out to eat, shopping, anything. There are also fun activities. Definitely go if you have the funds, as it is pretty pricey.
