I'm a junior, and I'm choosing between being a CIT at my old sleepaway camp, or going to an academic camp.

Does it really matter what I do this summer? I'm aiming high (upper Ivies) so I really need to know.

Thanks! :)

Well, I wwas in the same predicament, and I think if you enjoy camp and have a lot of fun, you should go to camp!

Why? Being a CIT is NOT like going to camp as you know it. For me it was six-weeks of FUN but HARD work, since you are basically a counselor without getting paid. I also got volunteer hours for being a CIT. So here we see DEDICATION from going for so many years and following through with becoming a counselor, and LEADERSHIP with helping children learn and grow. Camp fosters CONFIDENCE and a POSITIVE ATTITUDE. Aren't those adjectives we like to see on an application? ;)

Camp is a wonderful, wonderful place, and you won't have many more years to go there. Seize the moments- I know academic camps are enlightening and look good on applications, but remember, this is your LIFE!!! I think camp looks pretty good on an app (after all, it will be employment when you become a counselor) and you get to have those last couple years of childhood.

Most summer programs are expensive, and often far away, and I really don't think many look as good as one may think on an application (except for the ones that are free and selective).

I love camp! I'll be a junior counselor next year!!
