I heard Cornell has a summser session for people of almost all ages in high school. I was wondering, does anybody know how selective they are? I did bad on my PSAT because I was sick and I heard you have to submit it. Also, if anybody did go and could tell me how seletive it is, could you possibly also tell me if it was worth the time and money? Thanks.

i did it this past summer (after sophomore) and most likely again next summer.

it's not that selective (or at least i don't think) but it's a fairly self-selecting group of people. they're not going to care how you did on your PSATs anyways. (i think i did pretty badly on my soph ones). i don't even think i sent them mine.

i personally thought it was worth the time (well i am hopefully going back next summer. sooo).

but if they don't have something that you're interested in...then don't bother.

hope that was of some help. :)

Thanks, it actually helped a lot.

If you don't mind me asking...... Can you tell me what classes you were taking and what kind of grades and recs you had? Thanks a bunch.

In general, was it easy to make friends? I wanna go for a week or maybe 3 weeks. Can you get recs from the teachers you had?

spacemancraig:
i was taking fairly standard classes. french 3, chem, geo/trig (our school does it weird, i had alg2 the year before), core (our version of history.) and english. no honors, b+ average, and (or at least im assuming it was) a really good rec from my chem teacher. but then again...it's a really challening prep school, but i doubt that was taken into consideration for the summer college.

the first few days were a little awkward. but i found it fairly easy to make friends. me and my roomate were almost complete opposites so she did her own thing, and i did mine, which didn't necessarily make it any easier to make friends. i was there for 3 weeks, and probably after 1 1/2-2 weeks you really get setteled in. if you can, i would recommend going for at least 3 weeks (i'm assuming that you're currently a junior, so you could do the 6 week option if you wanted). and yes, you can get recs from your profs. my mom keeps bugging me to keep in contact w/ my one from last summer because i got an A in the course, but i'm holding out because i'm hopping to get one this coming summer from more science/math oriented profs.

Definitely go. It shouldn't be too hard to get in, as long as your transcript shows some semblance of academic potential. Just write your essay on how interested you are in some topic and how badly you want to continue your study of the topic through this course at Cornell. I went for the past two summers, three weeks each, and had an amazing time. And come on, you're living in a hallway with 10 other guys/girls, you're practically forced into tight friendships through living in such close proximity. I agree with techiedork though, going for one week would probably be a waste of your time. It takes about a week to get settled in and really start making the most of the college environment.
