What is her instrument AsterMom or is she voice. There are programs with later deadlines.

Thanks, Stringfollies, her instrument is violin. I have also thought of NYSMF as a program with a later deadline.

my d wanted to do a summer music program to improve her instrument (voice) so that she can be competetive as a non-music major when she gets to college. She also loves singing and wants to have a fun summer. She picked interlochen because I went there as a kid. She didn't apply anywhere else.

I'll throw in my 2 cents on how summer programs are useful. I was a musician (trumpet) and was deciding on pursuing a career in music or some other profession. I was a good player, one of the best in my state, but found at interlochen what the real competition would be. I knew it wouldn't be an easy life if I pursued music. My mom went to Julliard (singer) and was a k-8 music teacher. She was a passionate, wonderful teacher but teaching just wasn't for me.
Later, when I was in med school, I considered music again. I applied to and went to the Aspen Music School for a summer. I realized that what I wanted out of music was to be an orchestral trumpet player and that I wouldn't be happy with less than this. I reallized, again, by working with some extrordinary musicians, that I wasn't going to get what I wanted out of the field. I went back to medical school, after that summer, with a new appreciation for medical school. I found those 2 summer programs, Interlochen and Aspen, were helpful in making my decisions. They also were the 2 very best summers of my life, without question.
I am, incidentally, happy with my career (medicine) and wish the best to all musicians.

Astermom --

A good sleeper for string players is Summit Music Festival in NY - they have great string teachers with a lot of flexibility in the program you choose. We have never ended up applying, but it really does look very interesting and I think their deadline is around May something.

KSStringdad's daughter went to a violin clinic last summer which sounds fabulous. I believe they planned it fairly late. Perhaps he'll chime in or you could PM him.

I'll see if I can come up with some others.

BUTI private lessons - last year the YAO lesson arrangement seemed a little disorganized. D ended up with one or two lessons, which she signed up for on some sort of sheet near the office. She had wanted to do more, but either missed out on the signup or the person she wanted only had a limited number of slots available. The lessons she did have were well worth it, though. She found it difficult to do as much with rep as she had wanted with all of the other demands at the program, but was pleased with her growth as an orchestral musician and to a lesser extent, chamber musician.

AsterMom, take a run through these:

There maay be a few options there

There are also a couple of the high level, prepro fellowship programs that may be "opened till filled" or have late dates, but these are really pretty stiff competition.

AsterMom, you might look into ARIA International ...it's a great program and they might consider a late application. (they have three different sessions, I think)

Thanks to everyone who has responded to my question re: summer programs.

I am learning alot and love the first-hand experiences.

Astermom, even if deadlines have passed, not all programs are filled and they will take late applicants. Last year, after my daughter received a rejection from her top choice summer program, we panicked and made some emails and calls. Aria International had openings, as did the International Music Academy in Pilsen (Czech Republic). We found that Killington Music Festival in Vermont had a late application date of April 1 last year (don't know if it's the same this year) and were willing to take late applications--I think we emailed them right about this time last year. My daughter happened to attend Summit Music Festival last year, in addition to her other program, and that had a very late application date. The private instructors are great, but the chamber music and orchestras were very disappointing.

One of the latest casualties of the recession is the Pennsylvania Governor's School of the Arts (among several PGS programs). This excellent 5-week program that was fully funded by the state has been suspended this year for economic reasons. It's sad and so unfair to the class of 2010 since a student is only eligible one year of his/her life.

Some states have never even HAD Governor School programs, and we (in those states) have been envious of those of you who have. Sorry for the latest economic casualty. :(

I will be going to Oberlin in Italy for voice this summer. I'm so excited!

Don9992-
It is so sad to see our governors school go. It was not only a strong program in the arts, but also academically. D always chose other summer programs, but the students that did participate were always top in their field. I know in our community several letters were sent to try to support keeping it, but I feel the decision was made.

My family also is affected by the canceling of the PA Gov. School for the Arts. My daughter was a dancer there before her senior year of HS, and it was choreography that she did there that probably helped her get into a great college. She had applied to be an ATRA (counselor) there this summer.

Another thought for AsterMom--

I don't know how the economy is affecting other summer programs, but it's probably a fair guess that the applications for many of them are down and perhaps the yield as well. Some of the more competitive programs may actually end up with unexpected openings late into this season. I hate to be a pessimist, but I think this is realistic. I know that a number of my son's music school friends are going home to work for money this summer rather than spend money on programs. I'm sure you'll find a good way to fill her summer!

Thanks to all for your very helpful suggestions! It looks as if there are plenty of musical options to look into. Getting a job is not a bad idea either -- or learning to drive, which she has not had time to do thus far.
