Hi,
Question...What is the difference between CAP21 NYU and CAP21 Summer MT? Thanks

Cama --

I think I can help you out a little bit. The CAP 21 NYU program is run through NYU itself; it is a four-week program; provides college credit; and consists of 28 hours of studio training through CAP 21 plus classes with NYU faculty and administration, and supervised activities in the evenings and weekends, including shows, screenings, museums, etc. Housing with meals are provided through NYU and are part of the cost.

The program through CAP 21 Summer MT is a six-week program, requires an audition (which NYU does not, although NYU requires an essay, a transcript, resume, letters of recommendation, and SAT scores) with many hours, probably 28-30 of studio training at CAP 21. It is not run through NYU itself, but through the CAP 21 studio. Housing is not automatic, but you may apply for housing through NYU. Weekends and evenings are not supervised through NYU, but my understanding is that the kids do things together anyway. Even though the CAP 21 program is six-weeks, it costs less -- room and board is not provided, credit is not provided and supervised activity is not provided. That may account for the tuition difference, although I've never tried to figure it out.

I hope that helps. My daughter decided to do the program through NYU because she wanted the more supervised atmosphere in NYC. The NYU program is still highly competitive, even in the absence of an audition. This year, they had in excess of 186 applications for 32 spots, 16 girls and 16 guys. The ration of girls to guys in the application pool is, of course, greater than 1:1, so it is a very tough for girls.

I hope this information is helpful. And if I am in error at all, someone please feel free to correct.

Yes
Thank you so much for your clarification...One more question if you do not mind... Since CAP21 NYU does not require an audition what do they base their highly selective acceptance rate on? Also is CAP21 a private studio or is it part of NYU? I am having difficulty understanding all of the studio options at NYU. Can you apply to both CAP21 Summer MT and NYU Cap21 in order to increase your chances of getting into one of the CAP21 summer programs?

Hi Cama- My D will be attending CAP 21 6 week program this year. She chose the less structured version as she was looking for more time and somehow she convinced me it was ok :)

CAP 21 itself is the MT studio for the NYU Tisch School during the normal school year. My understanding is however that is it a completely independant group and they run their own summer MT program (probably because it generates revenue). NYU also runs theirs (to capture the same revenues). NYU's is shorter and has different requirements than CAP, although NO audition. CAP DID require an audition as well as recommendations, etc.

In my mind, the biggest differences are time in studio, college credit (in the NYU program) and supervision (less with CAP).

Hope this helps!

MikksMom

Yeah MotherMoo and Jessica. We remember how anxious you were to apply to CMU and worried it was a tad too late. So, it all worked out.

Please remember there's been a MySpace group created (with a link earlier in this thread) for the CMU kids from CC to "meet" before they come to campus.

Cama --

Yes, you can apply to both to increase your chances. And as to what they are looking for -- I'm not really sure. I think grades are a factor, as are the letters of recommendation which address your abilities generally as well as how you will deal with the responsibilities of the program and living in the city.

My d is going to CMU drama...

Looks like Kaylagurl decided to go to CMU and not Syracuse.

My d is going to CSSSA for Dance this summer

My S is attending Pre-College CMU-MT.

Does anyone know what, if any, the minimum SAT score required by NYU and Carnegie Mellon? I can't find a minimum score for either school, and I find it difficult to understand what his chances are based on the median scores. I would imagine the requirements for those 2 schools would be similar to UMich.

I know that his audition is the most important component for MT, but I'm pretty certain that no one gets admitted to UMich without at least a 1650 on the SAT (based on the 1100 posted on the website, under the old SAT).

Johnsmom,

Not really sure what the New numbers are, but under the old SAT scale I think the minimum they looked for at NYU was about 1300 (although some did get in with scores below that). Your talent audition and your grades/scores are looked at EQUALLY at NYU.

CMU is not the same. The have a conservatory approach and the audition is the most important thing. Not sure what their minimum SAT is either, but they are looking more at the audition than the grades/scores.

Daughter is going to NCSA and then the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) summer institute.

That sounds like a terrific pairing for a summer experience. Let us all know about the Oregon experience as not much has been said here on CC about it.
