tltl- the BTP experience is phenomenal and I cannot say enough great things about the program. I really wish everyone out there had the opportunity to attend. The training is exceptional, the faculty outstanding, and the level of the "showcase" you will see at the end of the three weeks will completely blow you away (the talent is astounding). The year my D went (06), Ben Vereen worked with some of the older kids on a piece that literally had 95% of the audience in tears (it was that good).

Your D is going to have the time of her life. My D would have gone back last summer (in fact she auditioned & was accepted) had it not been that she made it into Tisch's CAP21 summer program. She really wanted to explore NYU (and her dad and I in a way too)t before college auditions this past fall, but she was sad that she did not go back to BTP. She made some great friends that she then ran into during audition season and in fact, she met her (hopefully as in they requested each other) NYU roommate at BTP.

One comment she made was that she felt she did not bring enough "traditional dance clothing" (she loves colors and BTP faculty favors black attire) and we had to ship her a pair of comfortable sneakers for walking back and forth to campus (her keds and flip flops did not make the comfy cut :)).

to go on what MTgrlsmom said, they do expect dance attire in the traditional colors, but i saw many in sweats. basically, just stuff to move in. i brought way too many "normal" clothes and found i was pretty much in dance capris and tank tops the entire time. i did wear normal clothes some days, plus i wore dresses for a couple of things (the after-show party and the casting director day, plus a fun little sundress the first day) but i normally just wore dance clothes. also, they have starting doing a LOT of ballroom (we actually now have fulltime ballroom faculty!) so a skirt and character shoes are mandatory for that.

i also agree that the showcase is AMAZING. there are several different types of pieces and i was in two really wonderful numbers last summer. it's a lot of sweat and tears (especially the last three days at TBPAC...i think we got home at 1am the day before the show?) but it really becomes an amazing program.

Does anyone have info/opinions on CAP 21's Summer Musical Theatre program? I'm currently a freshman in college, so I'm looking at the undergrad program for credit, not the precollege program. Maybe they're the same, though? I was attracted to the program in the first place because, as far as I know, it's the only summer intensive at a reputable MT school available to college students. However, I'm amazed at how vague the website is, and the registration guide for NYU Summer has no info on specific programs. I'd love to get some feedback on this intensive before applying; it's probably gonna cost upwards of $10,000, so I want to make sure it's worth it.

Hey everyone!
I'm new to this site, but you guys seem to be very well-informed! I recently applied to NYU/Tisch's CAP21 MT summer pre-college program and am impatiently awaiting their decision...April 7th! I was just wondering if anyone else on here (or any of your sons or daughters, as this seems to be a parent-dominated board) applied to this program this year?

I've pretty much decided I am going to attend Indiana University, but because I've been so wrapped up in auditions and school I've completely forgotten about planning for the summer! Oops. I was wondering if it was even worth applying for the Midsummer Theatre program at Indiana, seeing as priority consideration began March 3rd and acceptances start going out in three days. Also, because I'm on spring break I wouldn't be able to get my guidance counselor to send my transcript until at least Monday when school starts again. I would definitely not bet on getting in, but I'm wondering if I should even bother just applying because I think it would be a good experience to be in the Indiana environment before the fall and maybe even get some credits or if it's really too late to apply? I live in the DC/MD/VA area so I'm also looking at other options. I wish I hadn't procrastinated so much seeing as it's quite late to audition/apply to other programs but if anyone had any suggestions of good theater programs and opportunities somewhat near my area would be so great. I looked at Catholic University but I think they only have an opera program, and I don't think American has anything theatre related. I'm going to look and see if GW and Maryland have anything. I also think I should find a job, haha.

Singer4life--Sorry I missed your Feb post with questions about BOCO's VCI summer program. S attended (along with some other CC MT posters) 3 summers ago and it was a good program, focused primarily on singing. Dance and acting were not the goal although musical theatre repertory was an emphasis and the voice teachers from the MT program participated, as did some professional directors who work with MT productions. S highly praised the experience and it fit that year's summer plans well because it was not a long program (2 weeks, I think). He was a rising junior that summer. The following summer he went to Northwestern's Cherubs program (the full 7 weeks). He's now finishing his first year at CMU in MT (and fyi, was also admitted to BOCO, an outcome which he felt may have partially been affected by his prior experience with some of the faculty there and increased awareness on his part about their program, based on the summer experience). There's always the risk of sounding like a bragging parent on this board, but I also realize it's important for people to be able to compare kids' interests and experiences when evaluating someone's posts. Hope this helps.

My daughter has been accepted to the Broadway Theatre Project this summer and it has been great to read the positive reviews and practical advice in this thread. She is a high school sophomore and just turned 16 last month. Since she will probably be one of the youngest participants, do prior attendees (or their mothers!) have any particular advice or recommendations? Thank you in advance for your help!

My D was also accepted at that age however ended up going to MPulse at U. Michigan that summer instead (after sophomore year). Then the following summer she chose BTP as a 17 year old. We had concerns about her being on the young side, but there really were no issues at all. She LOVED BTP and would return every year if we could afford it. There were no issues with older kids causing problems for the younger kids. The younger kids (high school age) are housed in a separate wing of the dorm, so they aren't quite living in the same area. But honestly we were concerned about possible drinking or other inappropiate behavior and our D said there was none. The kids are busy from 8:00 AM until midnight or so every night including weekends. There is really NO downtime where kids could get into trouble. They take classes all day, rehearse at night, have a nightly meeting with their group, etc. The performance at the end was absoulutely amazing. The people involved in chaperoning, teaching, and running the program were all very helpful and nice. My D even had to be taken to the emergency room one night when she had a problem with her ankle, and they arranged that and took fine care of her. I wouldn't hesitate to send your daughter to BTP at 16. As long as she is prepared to work hard, and sleep little, she'll have a great experience!

Hi Anne, My daughter is returning for her second year to BTP. Last year was her first year and she, too, was 16. (Her roommate was 16, there were several, she will not be alone.) She had been to some sort of summer intensive for about 5 years prior to this & nothing has ever meant as much to her as her experience at BTP. It is 7 days a week, about 14 hours a day, and just a tremendous program. I had to mail a care package within a couple of days of her arrival so I can give you some pointers. (We live in California) She will need a refillable water bottle. My daughter also took enough dance clothes so she did not have to do laundry. There's really no time to do it & she actually has that many leotards, etc! (She's been dancing for 14 years!) Usually for the finale, they wear black. We found lots of cute black tops at Forever 21 last summer. So we weren't spending a ton of money and she had some darling things. Febreeze is a great thing to pack! Just seal it tight. My daughter wished she had some hangers, I think she ended up borrowing some from a local girl. I sent her some decongestant/cold medicine, unfortunately she caught a cold in the beginning. Probably from the plane trip. I also sent all kinds of snacks and they went over well. She did not end up wearing all that many street clothes, they are in dance wear almost all the time. There is a BTP "Ball" after the last performance, but I think a cute sundress will do nicely. That's all off the top of my head. You will also see that she will probably only have time to talk to you when the day is done, about 11:30 EST! If you would like my daughter to talk to yours, private message me and I can send you her facebook or my space information. Make sure that you see the finale performance, you will be amazed at the caliber of talent, choreography & uniqueness of the numbers. Then you'll remember they put this together in only 3 weeks!! Congratulations on your daughter's entry!!

Has anyone heard from Interlachen MT 6wk program yet? Deadline for notifcation is 4/15. Do they notify you either way. My D has been accepted at OCU but is still waiting for Interlochen. Thanks

hi frantiki...from my experience with interlochen, i heard about April 7th...so hold tight a couple more days!! best of luck. interlochen is my favorite place in the world

Has anyone had an experience with Emerson's summer MT program? I just got my acceptance and I'm just wondering if anyone can speak from experience and tell me about the quality of this program. I also got accepted to the UARTS summer program, which I know a lot about. I'm still waiting to hear from NYU Steinhardt's program also.

So does anyone have any info on Emerson's summer program?
Anything would be great!

Thanks to NYDancemom and goldust7 for the great and reassuring information about BTP. It certainly sounds like they are too busy to get into any trouble! (But also too busy to do laundry. Thanks for the Febreze tip!) Do they send a suggested packing list? We haven't seen anything yet. D went to OCU last summer and they furnished a pretty detailed list.

I'd love to hear more about the MPulse program as well, nydancemom, since my daughter has that one on her list possibly for next summer.

anne1244, re: BTP, i was just getting my taxes together when i found my letter that went with the big packet of forms they send, and the big packet should be coming sometime in the next week or two weeks (the letter i have is dated april 1, 2007) and i want to say there is some IDEA of a packing list, but i don't remember since i can't find the rest of the packet. they have sheets, towels, and a pillow in the dorms...but i brought a couple of extra towels and a comforter because those dorms can get COLD at night. also what is helpful is WOOLITE. a little handwash in the sink goes a long way. i run the BTP 2008 group on facebook , so if your D has facebook, tell her to add it-faculty, staff, and the vets on there are more than happy to answer questions!

We attended a performing arts roundtable at Emerson this week and asked about the program. They said it's the first year they've had a MT summer stage program, so I imagine that's why there's not much info posted here about it. My D is also very interested in it.

How did they notify you of your acceptance? (email or letter?)

Eighteen year olds could attend the professional CAP21 program (for ages 18 and up), Circle in the Square Theater Program, Broadway Theater Project, French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts, Stagedoor Manor and others. It may be too late for some of these at this date but possibly not for all.....if you mean this summer.....see about CAP21 or CITS.
