Summer Programs - Discussion

One more question!! Sorry.. I ask a great many! :P

I've already sent off my MPulse application but I just realised that my school transcript, sealed in an envelope was not signed by my school guidance counselor. Neither was my recommendation by my voice teacher.. They were sealed with tape etc. but not signed as the website states that ".....in a sealed envelope with the teacher's signature across the back seal"

Uh oh? :S

My D (junior in HS) just got a call today from UARTS telling her she was accepted into the Summer MT program. She is so excited as she loved the school when we visited last summer and is looking forward to being taught by the faculty there.

Now she just has to make it through finals next week, Les Miz (she is Eponine) opening in 3 weeks and she has been cast as one of the leads in her highschool musical called By Jupiter.
In addition to that she is working on a song for Rent which she will audition for in March and if she's cast she will close the show on a Saturday and leave the next day for UARTS in the summer! I'm tired just writing about all that she does!

showmom-- your daughter is going to LOVE the UArts summer program. I went this past summer, and I had an awesome time and learned so much, and I'm sure she will too! If you/she have any questions, please let me know! I'd be more than happy to answer to the best of my ability!

musicislife Thank you so much. My D probably will have questions so we will definitely ask. She will be coming from CA so she will not be able to bring a lot of stuff with her for her room for the program. Is that a problem?

I know a lot of people came from relatively far away. Actually, one of my roommates came from Texas, and couldn't bring anything with her. My recommendation is to wait until your daughter moves in and meets her roommate(s). That way they can figure out what others have brought and what they still need. There are several stores within close proximity (KMart, CVS, etc) in which other living supplies can be bought. It was actually very good roommate bonding to go shopping together!

What do they mean by extenuating? I mean.. I know what that means, but it can't be too serious right? Because my father suffered a heart attack recently... and I'm not sure if I should put that down because as of now, I really need a scholarship if I want to attend.. (This is of course if I get in)

bwayjunkie...sorry about your dad and I hope he is recovering all right. Is your dad out of work due to his health? If so, that is a circumstance that dovetails with needing a scholarship due to your family's current situation. If your dad is back at work, his heart attack is not as relevant to asking for a scholarship. If your dad is out of work for an extended period of time, then explain this extenuating circumstance.

Yeah my dad is out of work to recover. He had the surgery the other day (angioplasty I think) so he's going to take some time off. Will I need to maybe send in a copy of our family's financial statements?

bwayjunkie...I do not know what is required to submit for scholarships to MPulse and it is best to inquire directly with the program. I hope your dad has a speedy recovery.

Has anyone who's applied to the MPulse Musical Theatre Workshop had luck with being accepted after the priority deadline date of February 2? I'll have everything needed for the application in by the 2nd except my audition tape, which I really won't be able to send till next week. The website says that it will accept students as space remains available. Has anyone ever been accepted after the priority dealine/do I have a good chance?

Hi, all. MT people are so much more chatty than the drama people! There's a lot more info available here ... particularly about summer programs. I have a D looking for a program in theater design/tech. She's already applied to CMU and Interlochen and plans to apply to CHERUBS. Does anyone know of any others? Thanks.

Thanks so much soozievt.. you've been very helpful :D

IHeartSondheim: I think the best thing for you to do is email mpulse@umich.edu. Dody Blackstone is very informative and she replies quickly. :)

theater mom: Maybe she can check out the NYU Tisch summer programs. New York City: Tisch School of the Arts at NYU

xx

Thanks, BWAYJUNKIE, my D would love Tisch, but there's no pre-college program for techies. Most good conservatory programs also teach design/production but not in their HS summer programs.

What about Frenchwoods

Tech (Technical) Theater Camp at French Woods

D needs a summer program that is over by July 20th which eliminates many. At this point, we are looking at OCU's first session or the NYU Steinhardt MT program. D did the OCU program the summer before last (BTP last summer), so we are familiar with their program. Any thoughts about OCU vs. Steinhardt? Does anyone know of other pre-college programs that would meet our schedule requirements?

Anne,

Ithaca College Summer college's MT Performance program is June 28 to July 17.

As you know, Steinhardt's program is June 29 - July 17 and
OCU's HS MT Program is June 13 to July 4

Stagedoor Manor's first session is June 22 to July 12....however, it is currently full but they maintain a waiting list which is long but they do draw from the wait list as inevitably some who signed up early change their plans by spring. You could get on the wait list but not count on it.

Interlochen's HS MT Workshop is June 20 to July 11 (3 weeks).

Interlochen also has a a MT Intensive for one week....June 13 to June 19.

Hope that helps.

You ask about OCU vs. Steinhardt......there are various things to consider in terms of which matches your D's desires.....but she has already done OCU and may wish a new experience or may wish to do it again if she loved it. OCU has a mix of training and production. Steinhardt is just training. Steinhardt is in NYC and the students do supervised activities in the city. Steinhardt is open to both rising seniors and college students whereas OCU is just HS students. Both programs are based in college programs that offer BM degrees and thus are more music focused. Both are audition based and so you'd have to see where she got in. She likely will get into OCU since she is a returning student but you could put in at Steinhardt to see what happens. Given your D's track record with BTP and OCU, sounds like she stands a good chance at Steinhardt's summer program.

Thanks so much, Soozievt. You are an absolute fount of knowlege, as always!

Bwayjunkie: Have you been to French Woods? It sounds fun ... and costly. Well, I'll tell my D anyway. She is working on the CHERUBS application right now. CHERUBS requires some acting so she thinks it's a little frightening. I told her applying doesn't commit you to anything but, really, I'm hoping she gets into CMU ... Yeah, I know, it's pretty costly too ... but I think a pre-college conservancy program would be perfect for her. Let's hope CMU thinks so too.

Questions 24/7 - for an LA program, Check US Performing Arts Camps. My D did one at Oberlin last year and loved it.
