Hi All,
Long time no post. Came back today to catch-up LOL, like that will ever happen. Saw this sub-thread on summer programs and wanted to put in my 50 cents...

My vote has been, and continues to be, for Perry-Mansfield School for the Performing Arts in Steamboat Springs, CO.

Their website is: www.perry-mansfield.org
or you can e-mail the office manager and all-around go-to gal, Carrie at p-m@perry-mansfield.org for information.

My D [freshman in HS currently], was just accepted for her second year, 1st as a HS/College session student [six weeks]. They have a very busy and serious six weeks with classes all day, five days a week and rehearsals 6-7 nights and afternoons a week.

Intermeadiates [middle school thru entering HS fresh] attend one of two 4 weeks sessions and are cast in either a musical theatre production or one of three dance productions.

HS/College is one six week session and they produce a musical, a straight drama & a major dance production.

Instructors are professionals who work the rest of the year in NYC, London, and Universities all over the world. Courses range from all forms of acting/theatre/musical theatre to almost all forms of dance and each class has auditions for level placements. Other courses offered are creative/play writing, costume & set design, art, private voice & instrument lessons.

The studios are mostly log or post & beam with walls that either slide open or lift open to make them open-air, in essence, you are rehearsing and performing in mountain aspen groves.

I do not know if they have any openings left for this summer, but it sure doesn't hurt to ask. They are VERY outgoing and relaxed [rocky mountain attitude being what it is] in the office, but don't let that throw you off thinking that they aren't serious about their discipline, trust me, they are.

Personally, I cannot imagine anyone not being extremely moved in their creativity by attending here.

Let me know if you have questions or concerns...

Hey all,

I attended CMU's pre-college for voice (as a part of the music division, not mt or drama) and had a wonderful time. My experience, however, led me to decide to not apply to CMU's music school. I had a few friends who were in the theatre program, and they all said it was intensive. The students were assigned plays to read (one after the other...they were constantly reading, taking notes, doing group work...I would watch them work together and read in the lounge as I left my dorm each day), took varied classes in dance, directing, acting, etc. There was certainly an academic element to the theatre program, and it pushed the kids out of their comfort zone. The directors held a dance audition at the beginning of the summer. The kids accepted to the theatre program were all talented..though some were better singers than others, better dancers than others, better actors than others...that's what happens when there is no audition to be accepted to the program. However, each student was placed in an appropriate level dance class according to their ability, and it seemed to work out OK. It was quite an experience to watch all of these talented theatre kids enmeshed in one place, affectionately named the "MT"s. I have remained in touch with all of the people I stayed closed to while at CMU; for the first time in my life I found people who I could completely relate to and have fun with (and these kids were from all over the country). We were also pretty much on the same intellectual level, which was very comforting. I do encourage anyone interested in the program to apply for it, it is rewarding.

My D received her Syracuse University Summer MT acceptance today. She was also earlier accepted to our NY Summer School of the Arts Theater Program. Just waiting on UMich. I called today and was told that they hope to have all the video/DVD auditions reviewed by the end of this week, then final decisions will be made. Was told I could call Friday or Monday and might get an answer over the phone so we can make a decision before it's too late on the other programs. Thought others might want to know that, since I know several of you are waiting too!

Thanks so much for the information! I was planning on sending out an audition recording for another summer program, next week. But now maybe I won't have to send the tape out, if I can find out about Umich on Friday or Monday... If I get in, that is --- jeesh... listen to me being so horribly optomistic! lol

Thanks again!

P.S. I LOVE this forum! You all are so awesome.... and so on top of it!

Oh, I forgot to ask... Should we be calling Dody Blackstone? I have that number. Or is their a specific other number that we should call? Thanks!

We live in NY so I just called the toll free number on the website, but I do think the woman who answered said her name was Dody. Hope we all find out soon!

Hi I had not visited college confidential in months and months and cannot believe that you mentioned Perry-Mansfield. My daughter has been accepted and will be attending this summer. She is a freshman too. She has never gone before and we do not know anyone who has. So it was reassuring to read your positive comments.

I was familiar with its reputation, but the location, as well as the warmth of everyone there with whom I spoke, made it easy to choose it over some of the other programs. I have tons of questions. Do you mind emailing me?

E-mail is on it's way!!! I just noticed you are in Florida, I asked you where you lived in my e-mail, just ignore that question :o).

This is going to be so exciting. Did you hear what the Musical is for the summer production? It is Cabaret!!! Last year they did Grease and every summer they do a mini-production of whatever musical they are doing in the 4th of July parade. It is a long-standing tradition that they take 1st place honors and the whole town gets jazzed when they hit the street to finish off the parade. Kind of Broadway meets Americana. If you can come for that weekend, it is a blast!

Talk soon!

Did anyone call on Friday to see if the decisionas had been made on acceptances for the UMich Summer Program? We were out of state and couldn't call. Thanks.

I spoke to Dody late Friday afternoon. She said not all decisions had been made yet, but that Mr. Wagner had authorized her to tell the kids who were on the "no" list so far, but only those kids, no one else could get results yet. She checked and said that my D was not on that list, but that, however, it doesn't mean she'll get in or onto the wait list (so apparently there is a wait list?). So although my D still doesn't know if she got in, she's excited that at least she apparently made it past some sort of first cut sort of thing. Dody said I could try calling Monday or Tuesday as they were in process of getting started writing up letters and that they probably (but not definitely) would be mailed late next week. Since our D has been accepted to two other programs that have deadlines approaching, she was trying to be helpful getting us the info ASAP. She did mention that she had had a lot of calls looking for results. This is nervewracking! I can't imagine what it will be like in two years when she is auditioning for college.

My mom called last Friday as well, and Dody pretty much gave the same response and nydancemom informed. She said Mr. Wagner had to "cull down" his list a bit over the weekend, to get down to the number of kids that they originally want in the program.

I am also on the "not know yet" list!! Whoohoo I'm excited that I at least made it past the "first phase"... (crosses fingers) We'll see on Monday or Tuesday! Congrats to your daughter, as well! Maybe we might end up being there together this summer! I'm trying not to get my hopes up about the whole thing, just in case, but I am still excited.

Does anyone have any info yet?

gkoukla - Just now saw your post about College Light Opera (S is an instrumentalist, so I only "lurk" in the MT thread occasionally.) I think I saw somewhere else that your D has other summer plans, but I, too am curious about CLO. S will be part of the orchestra there this summer. We are thrilled that he will have a place to sleep, food to eat, chance to play all summer long, and a bit of money, too. But we really know nothing about the program except what the website has. Would love to hear from somebody who knows more.

binx: I am so glad that finally someone has heard of CLO! And congratulations that your son will be playing there this summer. I think it sounds like a wonderful program! My D was asked to be in their cast, but had already accepted a placement in the Daniel Ferro Vocal Program in Italy. She was disappointed, and really hopes to be there next summer. I hope someone can tell us more about it, but I think you'll be happy with the opportunity for your S.

I'll let you know how it goes. My only regret is that we live a little far to attend any of the shows. :( I'm hoping someone in the Boston area perhaps has heard of it, or has seen a production, and can share some details.

S has an aunt in NH, so at least there will be someone within a couple hours if necessary. I'll actually be a lot closer to your D! Congrats to her; what an exciting opportunity.

binx: Seems as though we should trade places this summer! I will look forward to hearing all about it from your S.

Still nothing? Guess we'll hear sometime.

sigh Well, we called U of M today. She said that they aren't going to notify us over the phone for the final decision now. But that they are planning on sending the letters out tomorrow! So, maybe we will all hear 'yes' or 'no' by the end of this week?!?! I hope so!

Best wishes again, to everyone who auditioned!

I spoke with Dody Blackstone and my S has been accepted to the UMich Summer Program. I hope to see many of you (or your Ss or Ds) there. Please let me know as you receive responses. I'll try to get my S to communicate with you (he's currently rehearsing for 2 musicals and playing soccer, so he's not always available, but I'll try). "Break a leg" to all.
