Hey amuchan, how was your experience at Duke TIP? Which course did you take? I’m looking for more summer programs to apply for and the math/science field studies seem pretty interesting.

Thanks to 082349 for the internships!

I’ve applied to a number of summer programs, but all the programs I’m interested in start before my school year ends (our schedule is shifted back a bit).
Do you think it’s worth missing a good chunk of schools and having to make up finals early (around two weeks in advance :/) to go to a prestigious summer program?

Has anyone gone to Taft’s Summer Program? I considering it for this summer, 2013, and wanted to gain some primary source knowledge about the program itself.

Thanks,
-orangesrule108

Hi catch221,

I have some experience in this field. I left school 2 weeks early in order to go to a summer program last year. This is what I did:

1) Convinced my school’s principal to let me leave early because:
A) I was a great student and wanted to leave early for EDUCATIONAL purposes
B) I promised to take all of my finals/exams 3 weeks early so teachers would have
time to grade all of them.
2) I took all of my exams early, so I had to teach myself the material I would miss while I was gone
3) Got my yearbook, had everyone sign it, then got the heck out

Best,

@orangesrule108,

Thanks for your input! I figure that if I get in, I’ll have a talk with my counselor and see what options are available for me. I think that the school will understand that it’s important for me to attend
It definitely helps to know that someone has successfully done this- much appreciated. :)

For me it is nice & I am searching for the summer program like you mention in your post for me cousin. Thanks for posting this post.

Hi, has anyone taken Boston PROMYS or Stanford SuMac, or any other math/science related rigorous summer program? I am planning to apply to them this year, but not sure if they are worth the money. (they are so expensive!)

I did SSP last summer and it was about $4,000 for 5 1/2 weeks, but it was absolutely worth it. It was probably one of the best experiences of my life this far. Not only was it a lot of fun, but I gained a lot of confidence and learned a lot about what I plan on doing after college. It also gave me a lot of skills that I will need to be successful after high school, and that alone is worth the money. My assumption would be that almost any summer program would give you similar feelings if it was something you were interested in.

What scholarships are available for pre college programs?

Has anyone had exerience with JSA summer programs?

I’m not sure if I have the grades for any of the programs I want to go to; I got three B+s last year (freshman year–both semesters of Honors English and the first semester of Honors Alg 2/Trig; but I am a year ahead in math). I know I can get As in all my classes first semester (and I have more motivation to do so, as my grades will decide whether I can take the classes I’d like to take next year).

Will doing things like SciOly and being a member of science clubs boost my application? I’m also a math team and Science Bowl teacher for elementary school kids (I get paid). (the programs I’m thinking about applying to right now are Stanford Earth Sciences, a commuter internship for people from the general area; and COSMOS)

There are a lot of good summer programs that offer scholarships. I encourage students to google search for pre-college and different topics they’re interested in and look at the scholarship options. I work in student affairs and I’d be happy to help students find different programs… just PM me and let me know what you’re looking for. Also, check to make sure that the program is an application and not a registration… that makes a huge difference. I encourage you to apply to selective programs that offer college credit.

:) Good luck to everyone searching! Also, START YOUR SEARCH IN THE WINTER as some programs have early scholarship deadlines!

I was wondering, about the asking for recommendations, how I’m supposed to ask my math teacher, science teacher, and research mentor each to write 3-4 different recommendations if that’s the number of programs I’m applying for. I’m a junior applying to Simons, Clark, FSU YSP, and maybe SSP but I don’t want to apply to just one or two because I know it’s likely that I wouldn’t get accepted. To make matters worse, each open app so far has an entirely different form for recommendations so they can’t be recycled between program applications. How am I supposed to ask each person for that many recs lol
^ That’s definitely an issue, but unfortunately there’s no way around it. You may want to have a frank discussion with your teachers about this and ask them what they are willing to do. The other option is to spread them around more teachers. The good news is that this will make it really easy when you ask them for college recommendations.
Thanks @renaissancedad, I think what I’ll do is distribute them so each teacher only has to do 2 and then make sure they have the time. Thankfully I work with multiple faculty members in the lab and I know them fairly well. But really, it would be nice if summer programs went common app style…
@coffeeaddicted, you should also consider applying to the Yale Summer Program in Astrophysics: http://yspa.yale.edu
@magnetar22 unfortunately I can’t afford that program I did think about it but I decided I like SSP more and would be more willing to do a lot of fundraising to go there if I got accepted.
@coffeeaddicted , best of luck!
hi! does anyone know anything about how long do you have to make a decision after you get accepted to a summer program? I am talking specifically about UPenn’s summer academies and they did not specify on a date to decide, but only said to decide soon in order to secure my spot?
@Savita6 I’m interested in Pioneer and would like to ask some questions– hope that’s alright!
What field did you do your research in? I’m interested in mathematics/economics research; are there a lot of opportunities in this field at Pioneer? Also, how manageable did you find the workload– how many hours did you dedicate to Pioneer in a regular day throughout the program? And lastly, what do they look for in applicants (you mentioned their selectivity), interest or experience? Did you have research experience prior to Pioneer? Thanks in advance, and sorry if these questions wre redundant
