<p>I'm going to be applying to college next year (scary!) for environmental engineering. After some internal debate about what to do this summer, does anyone recommendations for summer programs for a current female junior involving engineering/physics? I'm applying to a pre-college program for the heck of it, but also wanted the option of a more hands-on research opportunity. I'm not applying to RSI/SHARP/SSP or other big name programs, but perhaps a college-based one that takes up a good chunk of summer, or something locally. I'm in the DC area and there's obviously an abundance of research going on at colleges, army bases, etc. So if anyone knows something about any possible programs (besides the GW/DoD program) that would be really helpful. <p>My daughter, now an engineering student, attended Carnegie Mellon's summer Pre-College between her junior and senior year of h.s. It didn't involve research, but she took two CMU classes (calculus and intro to elec. engineering). I think RPI has a summer program as well.</p>

<p>There are a bunch of great summer programs designed to attract females into engineering fields. Some of them are underwritten so the cost is low. There is a relatively new one at MIT called Women In Technology but I think the deadline for this summer may have already passed. You may find that several have deadlines that passed. My daughter attended ECOES at Stevens Institute of Technology that was 2 weeks. It was ok but they got to do some good field trips to various industry sites. She also attended SSTP at the Univ of Florida for 7 weeks that did a good job of integrating fun summer field trips into the research program. There is a 3 week program at Notre Dame and one that sounded very interesting at Rose Hulman. IMHO these kinds of summer institutes provide a much broader enrichment experience than simply taking pre-college summer session classes.
