so NYLF, NSLC, and People to People sent me invitations to their summer programs, but i was wondering if 1) are they worth it, 2) do they do anything for one's college applications or would they just be excess fluff, and 3) which one should i go to?

neither get a job instead

I got one from People to People. Out of the three, People to People seems like the most prestigious (since you can't self-nominate youself?). It's over 60 years old and it's current Honorary Chairman is President Bush, so it's more legitimate than the other two. PM me if you want to talk about this more...I'm confused about this as well.

i think you have to be nominated to participate in any of the three programs. is there anyone else who's participated in any of these programs?

bump......

Your choice, really.

The NYLF, and pretty sure about NSLC, you can actually self-nominate. Most of the teachers at my school and all my other friends at their schools, basically the teacher put out the nominate sheet and told them to sign their name and put their address if they wanted to go.

But I heard from people that it was a great experiance, but its not a plus on your application.

got_rice,

I was wondering the same thing. I have been invited to the NSLC, and was planning on doing the Diplomacy Abroad program, which will happen in France, Brussels, and the Netherlands for 2 weeks.

I was hoping this would be a significant plus on my college Apps, but now i'm starting to doubt it.

I definitely didn't nominate myself........that's for sure

I just enrolled today online........should I still go through with it?

I got invited to that thing too. Just yesterday actually. I'm doing the Brown University medical summer program instead though.

anything that makes you pay money won't really be a significant plus to your app. it does show that you're not one of those bums who spend their summers doing nothing, but most applicants to (especially uber selective) schools aren't bums. if money's going to be an issue, get a job instead, or volunteer. they both weigh the same when put up with these expensive programs (unless you win significant scholarships to pay through them, which you can def. mention in your college app).

I've been invited for people to people in the past, and I got the nlsc thingy a few days ago. If you're actually interested, go ahead, but it won't help your application and ncls is like $5,000. It's financially out of reach for me, and I don't really want to go either

What about the Summer@Brown medical program. I chose that over NSLC for this summer, I was invited to both however. The Brown thing just seems more specialized towards my interests, and less money grubbing and more worth it.

brown seems more worth it, but a penny earned is a penny saved. not sure what that has to do with anything however lol:p

As far as money goes, my parents are only willing to put up $ 1000. The rest of the money (almost 4,000) I have to raise myself through fundraising, scholarships, and what not.

I'll give it a try, but it's a lot of money to earn in 2-3 months.

I'm also volunteering at CHOP (children's hospital of Phila.), so that won't be my only summer experince/activity.

how do you expect to raise 4,000 in 2-3 months? That's roughly $1,333.33 a month, more than your parents contribution!

I know this has absolutely nothing to do with your thread..but everytime I see your name, I automatically think of this song made by an asian showing how much better asians are that goes "Got Rice B----? Got rice? Got food, got soup, got spiiice?". lol sorry just thought I should share =p

yo just get a job its bettter then these crap scams

The Brown program is actually more expensive but it's better. I think the NSLC thing was $2000 and the Brown thing without room and board is $2600, I'll be staying with relatives in Providence.

Helix, Where are you volunteering in CHOP?

hey sarorah, i love the got rice song! it's hilarious, lol.

anyways, money is also an issue for me. i applied to get a scholarship at NYLF but they said apparently i don't have as much of a financial need as other applicants, although my parents would only put up around $800 and the program's around $2000 i believe.

Texasmathwhiz, what is Brown's medical program? is it the same thing as taking classes through summer @ brown?
