Has anyone received the book yet? I got an email saying that it was sent out July 21st. I do live in California, so I expect some delay, but its already been a week...

I don't think they mailed it last friday, like the email said they did

bump (10 char)

I don't think they mailed it yet either. I or anyone that I know hasn't gotten it yet.......

nope...i'm in NC; still haven't gotten it...

Yeah...I'm leaving for Duke in about a week, so we better get the book soon. Pwild starts way too early...but it should be fun =]. I'll prolly read on the flight there.

I live in NC, and I still haven't received it yet.

I don't understand why they couldn't of shipped them out sooner. They've had a few months.

Just take the book out from your local library and read it in the meantime until you get it. It does seem REALLY late, though -- I don't think it was this late before we got it last year. But, the reason why it's late could be explained if they do the same thing for you that they did for us -- last year, they had special books printed out just for us that said "Duke Class of 2009 Summer Reading" on the cover. It was actually pretty cool. But yeah, it took them a while to decide on the final book, and once they did they had to get special copies printed (that is, if they're still doing that), so that could explain the long delay.

Hmmmm.....Library idea is smart! :-) I was holding out on buying the book b/c they said they'd give it to us free......and I don't like wasting things or $$

Yeah...I just got tired of waiting and got it from the library about a week ago. I finished the book on Saturday. But I heard that someone in NC got their copy today, so it's just a matter of time before the rest of us get them...

just some words of advice...don't stress about the book. it will NOT in any way be a part of a class discussion or test or anything. it is purely for discussion between peers. it's used as a launching point for discussions with your FAC. if you don't read it, don't worry about it. if you want to read it, the timing should not be a problem - you will be expected to read much more material in less time in class (it will also be much less interesting stuff). i had 2 classes last year (one/semester) in which i had 200+ pages of reading per week. you'll have to be able to handle that, think of this as practice. :-)

I know it's not that big a deal, but they're changing the summer reading discussion format this year in that faculty members will now also be leading discussions among groups, though it seems that these "groups" are your residence halls. I'm not saying to stress out or anything... just that some more important people who will be actually looking for a discussion of the book will be leading some discussions.

if you don't read the book and are honestly worried about the discussion (because you won't have anything to say), just don't go. even the "mandatory" orientation events can be easily skipped without consequence - at least that was the case last year.

Haha yeah, that's true... as a pBUILDer, I was wiped when orientation started, and I know of many friends who went back to their parents' hotel rooms and slept for the entire day after move-in. Definitely don't worry about making it to the mandatory events. Though, it is kind of cool having intellectual conversation with your peers about a book that you all "read"... well, at least it was for me because I didn't really get a lot of that in high school.

my copy arrived today in the mail...I wonder when I'll get around to reading it! ;)

Wow...interesting so far, especially for all those wanting to do med.

it's almost a replication of the true story that was in the news while back, only the news story was about a boy, and the news story wasn't so damn commercial... i wasn't impressed.

hey guys, letting you know, my cousin was a frosh last year and missed every event related to the Kite Runner, which was last years book, as well as pretty much every other orientation event - theres no penalty, except your TA might dislike you, but in his case his TA missed it too

what does a TA have to do with orientation? during orientation last year i skipped all of the kite runner sessions (mostly, if not all, with my FAC...) and there were no consequences whatsoever. i'm actualy friends with her now so it's quite obvious that it had no affect. i did not even encounter a TA until classes started and by that point the kite runner was in the past. don't worry about anything....it's all good!
