Ok...please tell me...do we have summer reading assignments??

I read in a letter that they were supposed to post it June 1 but I couldn't find it on the website without too much effort and I'm too lazy to dig though all my mail to find out where it is again.

I did not know there was summer reading. What college are you in? Or is for all incoming freshman?

Yep there is. You have to have your WebStac ID and password, which they either mail to you or you get it when you do an ArtSci Weekend. You use this stuff to access Telesis which has all of the info on it once you type in Freshman Reading Program.

I haven't been able to sign in to Telesis with my ID and password yet - anyone want to share what exactly the freshman reading is? I keep getting an error message when I try to sign in.

same here...

i'd like to know so that i can go ahead and buy the book.

not that i'm actually going to read it till the day before orientation. :)

Maybe i'll extend it to the car trip there with all my weird Asian junk. :P

when my sister was a freshman (in 03) the summer reading was a huge joke... it was a packet of essays on stuff like ethics, etc... you know, issues that you'll face in college, etc. I think she had to write a paragraph about one of the essays at the beginning of the year. maybe it's changed though?

The freshman summer reading is a little thin thing like 20 pages. class of 08 was on politics, ethics, etc. You basically discuss it with a certain random professor along with your floor or half your floor and talk about the readings. Personally, our floor didnt have to write an essay or anything. We just talked (most of us didnt ahah) and thats it. Yeah, not what you were expecting?

If you mean books for Writing 1 which all freshman in ART SCI must take! here they are

CUSTOM READER FOR WRITING I
Author: CUSTOM PUB Edition: N/A
(this can only be bought at school - its really small, collection of essays)

BROWN: LAST DISCOVERY OF AMERICA (P)
Author: RODRIGUEZ Edition: N/A
(virtually everyone does not like this book, but its got good ideas and lessons once you get pass the few days of trying to figure out what hes trying to get at. Believe me when I say he isnt the most straightforward writer persay)

ST MARTIN'S HANDBOOK (WITH 2003 MLA UPD)(W/CD:#40902-8) (P)
Author: LUNSFORD Edition: 5TH
(I didn't use it once, you can just freeload off someone else. Mainly its for MLA, but there are one or two insane teachers who test out of the handbook. Its expensive and I didnt use it. But hey its your money =) )

WRITING WITH SOURCES: GUIDE FOR STUDENTS (P)
Author: HARVEY Edition: N/A
(Once again we used this VeerryyyYYY little, but its very cheap, I got quizzed out of it and my teacher was laid back so you will probably want to buy this or jip off your mates. Its reallllllllllllllllllllllly thin like 10 pages but its cheap)

I suggest buying your books online. The bookstore at WUSTl sells the books for enormous prices. Half.com is good, make sure you read the descriptions though and edition etc etc (ISBN is the best cause its exact)

If anything Brown would be best to read first, but its realy not that important considering Writing 1 is pretty easy if you try. If your not that good at writing, well just dont get caught at the end of the semester when they start loading Everyyything on you at once. But its a fun class. Just dont mess around with the research paper rough and the final because those are doozies, can lower your grade like mad. Actually some teachers just give you your grade as your research paper final, but thankfully mine did not! Get Hazleton! HES AWESOME !

As to all the other colleges, no clue except engineers dont need to take Writing 1

Good Luck!

Very helpful... thanks. But still, what exactly are we reading? As in, name of book/packet?

I listed the Writing 1 books you are required to read so Im assuming you mean the community reading thing.

Its actually custom made for WashU so its not a book or packet you can buy from Borders or something. Last year the reading consisted of short excerpts from articles such as Thomas Jefferson's writings, Emancipation Proclamation, etc etc on a specific theme of ethics.

If this wasnt what you were asking about please be more specific.

Yeah, that's what I was asking. So how do we get it, or do we read it when we get there?

The custom reading said above will be mailed to you a few weeks before you ship off to college.

ahah, so if i'm in engineering, what do i need to read? :( that is for art sci

engineers are not required to take writing 1. However if you switch majors then yes you will be required to take writing 1. Im almost perfectly sure =D. As for the custom reading packet, everyone gets the same one so youll have to wait for them to send it to you.

has the "writing 1" requirement for engineers changed? because my class had to take it, but we could test out with the placement exam or with an satII writing score... then again that was a few years ago...

Yeah, I thought engineers had to either get a 5 on an AP English test or do well on SAT II English in order to not take Writing 1. Has it changed? That would make me a happy camper incase I don't get a 5 on the AP test.

Oh yes thats what I forgot, ahah thank god left that "Im almost perfectly sure =D" comment to shamelessly save my ass. But yes Engineers will need to take the placement exam to pass out for get a 5 on the AP English test. Sorry (obviously Im not an engineer) But if you DONT pass out writing the books are the same listed above in my previous comment.

This is a link to look at freshman reading programs :)

i think u needed to get a 700 or higher on ur SATII writing. I got that so i'm pretty sure I tested out of writing 1. though i do have to take 1 semester of some writing class
