wasn’t that announced a long time ago…like maybe fall semester? I remember having to make the argument to someone that this wasn’t some random book and I’d definitely heard of it before. maybe I’ll read it.

I actually read Lincoln at Gettysburg and think of it surprisingly often…I think I actually learned some things from it. like about what the Lincoln Douglas debates were about, the romanticizing of death and children, the rural cemetery movement (maybe?)…considering that it’s the last time I engaged with US history that’s not bad.

To be honest, I was a little disappointed to learn that the book chosen for our class was a science fiction one. I figured pretty early that DADOES? wasn’t just any random book, but I would’ve personally preferred a selection from the Great Books. Not a huge sci fi fan here.

Yes, can someone explain what this whole summer reading thing is about? I’ve never heard anything about it, is it something they send you after you put your deposit in or something?

You get mailed a book (for the Class of 2014, that’s Phillip K Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) to read over the summer along with the rest of your orientation materials.

The idea is to provide the incoming class with a shared experience of the intellectual variety. This might potentially be pretty lame (“So, what did you think about DADOES?”) but it’s a known fact that people bond better when they have things in common, even if that thing is a semi-random science fiction book. It sure beats nodding along and feigning interest while someone describes how they single-handedly brought their football team to the state championships or whatever.
