Summer Reading Program

Is the summer reading mandatory? Or will it be referenced to in any English class or something? Cuz the book looks pretty dry and I'd love to not have to read it.

Not mandatory at all. “Encouraged”, but not mandatory.

What is the book anyway?

A Home on the Field by Paul Cuadros. Idk who chose that gem.

I know, it doesn’t sound interesting. I would do the summer reading if the book looked interesting to me, but it doesn’t. :(

It’s actually a really great book. Very down-home - it’s about Siler City, NC in the late 90s, early 2000s when it had to adjust to an influx of Hispanic immigrants. In particular about the soccer team the writer started and coached. I find I can really connect with it because 1) it’s in NC, 2) I have friends who go through similar situations, 3) it’s candidly written.
And it’s a quick book, not long like Twilight or anything. (And of much higher literary merit than Twilight)
Don’t judge a book by its cover! We’re going to college to learn to open our minds and see the world around us.
