Is the summer reading required? I see that it says that students are "expected" to do it, but it doesn't say if it's a requirement. The book sounds really boring. :( I'm not into baseball at all. I just don't want to read it unless I absolutely have to.

It’s really not required at all. You go to optional (at least I think they’re optional?) discussion groups led by a random professor and discuss the book.

It’s still kinda cool though, you get to meet some other freshmen and a professor before you start out. My professor was in the biostatistics department.

I heard that in some first year seminars on the first test they’d have an extra credit question about the book.

I say at LEAST try. The worst thing that would happen is you don’t like it. It’s a book. It won’t kill you.

I read my summer book because I thought that I had to. I didn’t go to the discussions. I never ever even had to think about the book. Its not something you need to worry about.
