Summer Scholars Program in Biology and Biomedical Engineering

Didn't get any engineering scholarships :-(, but I got into this program.

How fun was this program and is getting accepted in it an implied acceptance to WUSTL itself?

Hey RypuAK,

First of all, Congratulations! Acceptance into SSBBR does indeed imply acceptance into the school itself. This will be explicitly explained in the letter that you should be receiving very soon.

I participated in SSBBR prior to my freshman year and it was one of the best experiences of my life. The program is basically 6 weeks of full-time research plus a week of lab training. There are also weekly seminars from experts in their fields and field trips to different parts of St. Louis.

Despite all of the programming, the program is really chill and you basically live as an independent college student before officially starting classes. This also means that when classes start in the fall, you already know where everything is and have a solid group of friends.

On the academic side of things, I learned so much more through research than any science class in high school and it even led to a publication during my freshman year.

Let me know if you have any more questions and congratulations again!

MS

P.S. The coordinator, Amy, is the most awesome person you will ever meet and everyone loves her! Also, she is in charge of the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship at WUSTL which is an awesome research experience for later during your undergrad education.

<3 Thank you very very much for that thoughtful response. I’ll be keeping an eye on the mailbox for sure!

I got into this program too! I’m so excited!

Congratulations RypuAK and mariposa100308!

I got accepted into this program as well. When I saw that I got in, I was so confused whether that meant I got into the school or not.

Musicalscientist thanks for clearing that up!

Hey guys! i got accepted in this program as well as a finalist for danforth scholars!
this sounds very exciting based on what musicalscientist has said! cant wait to hear more abt this program!

Congrats purplerocks!

Have any of you guys recieved that letter that musicalscientist was talking about?

just got the information letter today, which said that i would get the acceptance package to the college soon as well!

Same, I just got it just a couple of minutes ago. I’m really excited about this whole thing and can’t wait to get the admission package!

So is WashU your number one school?

Well for me, I was really banking on a merit scholarship :-(. I dunno; we’ll see.

I got into SSBBR too! Wash U is definitely a top choice for me, but without a merit scholarship (I’m not a finalist for moog, unfortunately) it looks unlikely…

Same with me~ but I really do like WashU!

Only if money weren’t an issue~

Same here. I’m about 99% sure that I’ll be going to WashU, but I have to wait and see how the financial aid package compares to other offers.

So when do you guys graduate? For me its June 24th or so, which means that during this scholarship program, I’d have to fly back to New York from St. Louis to graduate and then fly back the next day… or miss my graduation o.O

washu is a top choice esp due to the danforth finalist offer! i am still looking at all options tho
congrats to everyone again!

i graduate june 5

I graduated after the program began as well. I ended up going to st. louis for the first week of the program, flying back to los angeles (where i’m from) for the weekend + a few days for my graduation, and then flying back to st. louis for the rest of the program. It worked out fine. If that doesn’t sound doable for you, I know of several people that just didn’t go to their graduation. None of them regretted it.

MS

Oh okay, thats a relief~ I was a little worried there… bc I do want to go to my own high school graduation
So after the first week, we get placed with a researcher and work in their lab, correct? Is it common for students to go back to the lab and work their during the school year?

If you decide to attend, you will get a list of professors. You then rank the labs that you want to work in and hopefully you get placed in your top choice. The first week is a fairly intense lab training class and then the rest is research. I have federal work-study, so I continued working in my lab this year. I know of one other person who is still working in his lab. It seems it’s not extremely common, but if you want to, it’s not usually a problem.

Thanks for all the information musicalscientist~
I’m very excited about WashU and can’t wait to actually get the admissions package!

have you received your packet yet?
