I was just curious as to how much attending the summer scholars program would help an application for the university itself. Does it have much weight or is it not that big of a deal?

I guess it shows you are interested in the school, but what is everyone's opinion on this?

I went last year and at an admissions seminar we went to during the program they made it clear that attending summer scholars doesn’t really give you a leg up in the admissions process.
Personally, I was deferred and am now waitlisted, along with some other summer scholars students. However, I know that many were admitted and others were flat out rejected.

I would say that you should go if you are interested in a particular program, but just don’t use it as an application filler - ND likes passionate people and it is hard to fake total disinterest in something. Also you will most likely excel in something you like versus something you hate.

I attended Summer Scholars last year. It was an amazing experience. However, I was recently denied admission. Like previously mentioned, at an admissions seminar we were told that attendance at the program did guarantee admission into Notre Dame. If anything, I think that Summer Scholars may give you an advantage over applicants with very similar credentials, being that you were so interested in the university to spend two weeks living on campus. Also, you possibly could use your experience at Summer Scholars toprove that you are very familiar with Notre Dame in your admissions essays. I hoped this helped haha.

Although attending doesn’t give you a big advantage in the admissions process, I would strongly suggest to attend. Summer Scholars was probably the most rewarding experience of my life. ND’s a great campus to get the “college feel.” The classes were amazing in every track and the professors were great too. My professor wrote me a letter of rec (which the university actually lost and the prof being old fashioned worte it on a typewriter and didn’t have an extra copy so had to rewrite a different one).

How competitive do you feel the Summer Scholars program is? I am applying for summer 2010 and I was curious to hear some feedback on how competitive people thought the program was.

My oldest Son attended the 2009 session in the Life Sciences Trac. He has stated it was the best experience of his life. He has always loved ND and the two weeks on campus as a student confirmed that the best fit for him was at South Bend.

He is currently wait listed and hoping for admission. He will pass up many other school’s offers of enrollment with scholarship money and athletic opportunities if he is accepted off of the wait list at Notre Dame. My advice as a parent - if Notre Dame is your passion apply for the Summer Scholars Program. It is an amazing opportunity provided by the University.

To Lucky317 - Summer Scholars is competitive but not nearly as rough as the undergraduate admissions process. If you have a pasion for the ND community and see yourself as student there - go for it! You will not be dissapointed if admitted.

My D attended Summer Scholars summer 2009 in Life Sciences. It was the best time of her summer. H said that at the parents meeting they specifically said it would not give student a preference for admittance and in our case it rang true. D was rejected and after about 2 minutes of heartbreak is over it. She found out at Life Sciences that she does not want to major in any science and that probably affected the way she experienced the program.

It was life changing for her in the people that she met. She made some friends that she is still in contact with and will forever be thankful for the 2 weeks.

It is competitive but not overly so… they want the $$$ parents pay to send their students to this program. ND has many summer programs that are by invitation and scholarship only.

Who is going to the summer scholars program and what program? What are your scores (PSAT or other scores) and other statistics. Just curious for future reference.

Don’t be nervous! I know it is much easier said than done, firsthand. Last year, I applied for the Summer Scholars (Pre-law) and was accepted. It was an absolutely fantastic experience. I wasn’t sure if I was going to go and actually planned on not attending. I’m somewhat quieter, and I still had no trouble finding friends. It was kind of scary how alike all the SS kids were! Everyone gets along great. I can’t tell you how much I loved it. My mom was a ND grad, and my sister goes there, so I have ND has always been No.1. I honestly can’t put into words how much I enjoyed it. Try not to worry, you are going to have such a memorable time!

Everyone else is right though. Unfortunately, SS does not have an impact on your admissions decision. I was put on the waiting list, and April has just crept by because the anticipation is killing me!

Good luck! Let us know how you enjoyed it!
