Summer school?

This is for a friend since she doesn’t have an account.
She didn’t fulfill her conditions of admissions by failing one of her classes but the school sent an email said that it was okay. She was wondering whether she needed to take the summer class? Would it say in the email? I read it and it didn’t have anything like that there or in the conditions of admissions. Could someone confirm this please?

Did she offer to take the class in the summer in her original submission of the failing grade?

If neither side said anything about it, I think she’d be okay to not take it.

I think she mentioned that she was willing to take it if necessary at the university but she didn’t say she would take it.

Hmmmm…I’d have them call and ask just to be safe.

Was it just an elective class?

No it was an important class for her major but the CC she was in wasn’t very good with the class. She wanted to take it on campus if she really needed to take it but the uni didn’t mention it.
Do you know where they would mention these sort of things if they did?

It should be mentioned in the email or on the portal. It should clearly be laid out:

“After much deliberation we’re letting you in/end of story…”
Or
“After much deliberation we’re letting you in with the proviso that you take the course in summer with no lower than a B grade/end of story.”

If the email clearly says she’s admitted with no requirements, I would say there are no requirements. They will make her take it at the UC.

If I may ask, what major and which UC? Congrats to her! She missed a direct shot.

Thats what I figured lindy, but since I can’t see the exchange, I wanted to give very conservative advice.

You’re spot on, unless the original email said something like " I failed XYZ but I can re take it over the summer" and the response was “okay”, there might be some liability on the student’s part to make sure.

“can” is different than “will” however, so I think calling might be the best option.

I don’t think they would answer with an ok. The responses I’ve seen are pretty detailed. But yeah, you’re right, she should email to verify in case something is posted somewhere that they’re not seeing.

The response wasn’t really that detailed.
“and allow you to maintain your fall 2015 admission status despite receiving a ‘D’ grade in (insert class here). Please refer to the instructions below regarding receipt of your transcripts and exam results…”
and then it went on about sending the transcripts on time. There was no mention of summer school.
Should she send a reply back through email asking about it after all? She did explicitly write that she didn’t like the CC class and she would take it at the uni in which case I’d imagine the response would actually say instructions about how she should take the course and such.

Ah, she’s probably fine to take it at the UC

Do you think for the fall term?

All I know is if I get rescinded over a C, I’m going to find your friend and drag her to admissions with me.

I heard they’re not super strict so I hope you’ll be okay @fullload

@mizurue you’re fine. They’re letting it slide. I thought you meant you had an F when you said you failed. You can call or email if you want but it’s clear they just want to proceed forward.

Alright! Thanks for the responses! I’ll let my friend know

So @fullload, what’s the final status on that stats course? C?

Lindy, still not sure. I’m sitting on a low C right now, but the final which is in two weeks, counts for almost 50% of the grade. The good thing is, I finished my other four classes this week (all A’s), so I have 2 weeks to spend studying for one final. I really think I can nail it with at least a B. This is why I haven’t sent UCLA any emails yet. No need to send them a panic email when a B can still be reached.

Thanks for asking.

Good luck! 50% on a final? :frowning:

You can do it @fullload!!!

Thanks guys. Yeah, 50% is harsh, but in a way I’m glad because I get two weeks to study for it without any other classes, so it’s doable.
