Summer school.

I was planning on attending the 2 week Harvard Summer School. Is it worth it/ will it come in handy during admissions at colleges. Anyway I was already planning to go I just wanted to know if it had any other stuff than just the experience.

It may help you decide what direction you want to go with your college studies.

It will not help you get admitted to any college or university that you aren’t otherwise qualified for. Think of it as an interesting summer camp with a fancy name, and you will be fine.

Do remember that if college credits are awarded for the class(es) that you take, those credits will follow you for the rest of your life. You will need to request official copies of the transcript whenever you apply to a degree program, or for a job that requires all of your college-level transcripts. So don’t slack off just bcause it is summer.

A very expensive summer camp.

It’s non-credit.

What do you mean by “other stuff”?

Will you live there for the two weeks or commute?

As skieurope said, Harvard Summer School is quite expensive. If your family can afford it, you may meet some interesting fellow students and get exposure to the experience of a college-level class. It could even be fun.

Many teens work in the summer and taking two weeks off is not generally possible if you have a job.

I have to say, my kids did well with college admissions but not a single one of them ever wanted to go to school in the summer!!

My parents were very supportive of me taking a class last summer. Harvard’s program fit into my schedule and there were several classes that were interesting. I wanted to take a class in an area that interested me as a college major. I applied and it worked out. I am very glad that I took the class. It was a great experience… the application process, living away, and taking a college course. I got an amazing recommendation although I realize it won’t help me in any admissions situations. In fact, I didn’t use the recommendation in any other applications except as an extra for Harvard because I felt it could hurt. I was fortunate to have the opportunity.

Taking a class in the summer will definitely allow you to learn new things but won’t affect your chances of getting into Harvard or a certain university whose programs you participate in.
