Summer Science Program 2018

@chrish5 congrats!! when did you find out?

My son was taken off from the Biochemistry alternate list last evening.

is taking people off the alternate list basically over now? and the only chance we have is just the really rare cases where people suddenly choose to not go after committing?

It seems like last year they split up alternate decisions over a few days; hopefully that happens this year…

anyone else hear back? or are decisions pretty much final now?

i just got off the waiting list for biochem at purdue today. since i come from a fairly noncompetitive state, i was wondering about the level of students there and whether i would fit in? ive heard that these top summer programs are filled with olympiad finalists, and i was just wondering whether i would be able to fit in well with the others there.

@lolobabbins , you got nothing to worry. You will be teamed up with other members. Since it’s a group project, leaving you behind will lead to a failure of a team. Students will help each other. Is there any FB or Instagram group for SSP 18 Biochemistry?

Is there a group for SSP 18 @ Boulder yet?

@SebaRaj thank you so much! I was also wondering on how to exactly accept the invitation. do you just fill out the online form with information?

@lolobabbins, call Dr.Bowden. I assume he called you.

my son is still on alternate list for bio chem. I guess all admissions are finalize now.
@SebaRaj How were you able to secure your son’s position? Did you reach out to them after him being on alternate list? Not sure if i can do anything for him to get admission, he have excellent academic records and he is in top in NJ for Bio league and Chem league still he didn’t get. I am sure all others are same there

@ESAmin

We didn’t call SSP. In fact, I was away in VEX World Robotics Competition with my other son when my son received an email in the evening from SSP. Dr.Bowden called my son on his cell phone as well after 2 hours of him receiving email. You have to wait till everyone pays the full fee. I think still being in an alternate list is a good news and it means not everyone not paid the full fee yet. All you can do is just wait and pray. God Bless.

hi everyone! I know I’m a little late haha but I’m trying to apply for 2019. I’m an international application though, and so I know my app deadline is like 1 month earlier. But on the SSP website they say this:
Q. When and how are decisions announced?
A. About 5-6 weeks after the deadline, we will update your application status and email decisions to applicants. Log in to check.
So would that mean they admit international applicants before they do the US ones? I’m just confused/curious bc I thought it’d be the opposite…

@heleena They admit international applicants before domestic ones because the visas takes extra time.

Oh… that makes sense. Do you know how many international students get into summer science program? Also, they don’t seem to show the overall tuition fee (w/o scholarships)… Do you know what it is?

My memory is that typically about 1/6th of the attendees are international.

This page https://summerscience.org/admissions/fee-and-financial-aid/ says that last summer the full fee was $6,950 (plus airfare).

Okay, thank you for all the info! but it really sounds like you gotta have stellar sat/gpa stuff, esp as an international student…

I want to attend SSP 2019, but I’m not sure if I’ll get in when I’m a junior and I haven’t done AP Chem or Bio. The thing is, I go to a canadian french immersion high school and our AP system is really strange (according to my american friends). We have to do “pre-aps” before doing the AP course. Usually these pre-aps are for Juniors, so I’m in Pre-AP Honours Physics 11, Pre-AP Chem 11, and Pre-AP Bio 11. Some students skip science courses over the summer, but I wasn’t able to because I’m in french immersion, which is a program where we take certain classes in 100% french. Science 10 was a french immersion course so if took it online and not in school, I wouldn’t have enough french credits to graduate with my french bilingual diploma (which is the whole point of french immersion). However, I’m taking the most difficult science courses I can at the moment, and I completed AP Calculus AB (Currently doing BC). Will this affect my chances of getting in?

Hi! I’m assuming you’re applying to SSP Biochem? I can’t really say whether this will make a big impact on your chance at admission for sure (I’m a junior myself), but my hunch is that as long as you demonstrate your interest in biochem and are taking the hardest science classes possible at your school, it should be fine. There is also a short answer question where you can use the space to describe any broader context to your application (i.e. the constraints of your school’s AP system). Hope this helps

For SSP, are you allowed to provide test scores other than the standardised tests?
