Summer Science Program (SSP) 2009

how long were ur guys' essays total? almost 1400 words here.
it usually takes 4-5 days to reach NC from west coast right? so if I send tomorrow, monday, by priority, it would reach NC by friday? (since priority is 2-3 days) I just want to make sure. can anyone confirm

yeah, the problem is though, tomjonesistheman, you cant send anything tomorrow, so youd have to wait till tuesday. be like me, send it so that ur in the second round =D.

oh yeah, sometimes people get deferred right? and arent told if theyre admitted until later on?

Woot! Sent my docs over. The courier company said it will reach the destination in USA exactly on 20th in all probability :D
fingers crossed

Yeah, I just placed all my stuff (physics teacher came through, yay, though I had to sit there and watch him finish it) in the (hopefully) responsible hands of the school, who will put in my official transcript and FedEx Overnight it tomorrow morning! So everything's out of my hands now. I feel so much more relaxed :D Good luck everyone :)

nice! I just need to tweak some stuff still...and I'll priority mail it tomorrow (since priority takes 2 days to reach NC from CA..right?) but my science teacher mailed his rec by himself. I hope he did that..

If you send it in after the 20th, do they look at them under a rolling basis or do they wait until the end of the second period?

ugh, you guys have no idea how frustrated i am with my science teacher .. i asked her to write the rec on the first week of january and i've reminded her EVERY week since then and she has NOT given it to me! ughh i hate myself for not having been aggressive and just told her, "look, i need that recommendation ASAP."

and i TOLD her the deadline was on the 20th (tho it's not but i want to get this in as early as possible) and does she honestly think i would spend $20+ on overnight shipping?!

^IF you said that, she might write you a bad recomendation. Better late and strong than early and weak.

Did anyone apply after Feb 20 in previous years?? Is it hard to get in when you apply late? The SSP guy I emailed said they prefered if they recieved applications early . . .

Sent mine today. hopefully, I get in! How long does it take for early applicants to receive notice?

From what I've read, the first decisions are sent out two weeks after Feb 20th nerves
this whole waiting situation is extremely frustrating

I'm so happy I found this forum (new member)! I sent my app out this morning so I very much hope it gets there by Friday. Good luck to everybody : D

@ QuantumArbiter: I applied after February 20th. I did not have stellar stats. => It's not all that much harder to get in after the first deadline.

^ Ok, thanks.

yeah, i think what it is that as long as you send ur app a reasonable time after the 20th, like say next week, then in the end itll be fine, and its no real difference. after all, some people get deferred, dont they?

uhh, I have a question. Can I send four recommendations? Here are my choices:
1) Physics teacher (great)
2) Calc Teacher (seems prematurely done)
3) Counselor (she wrote really high of me)
4) UC Santa Cruz Professor who taught me Astronomy during COSMOS summer program

I have four too. But i'm not sending in the one by my professor at a university. I don't think he knows me well enough outside of a laboratory setting. On the other hand, I'm sending in one by my debate and speech coach because I basically pour my heart out for those two activities, and he knows it.

I see

and two more things.
1) For Essay 4 part d, did any of you write about one outside competition or did you just say which competitions you competed in?
2) How many of you had your essays exceed the given limit?

I exceeded all the limits, but they were within the 10% rule as it is called.

I'm kind of OCDish so I took out words until my answers were within the word limit. Or exactly at it, which half of mine were.
