Summer Science Program (SSP)

Has anyone done this? I just discovered it a few days ago and want to hear from people who have done the program. How hard do you think it is to get in, and what were your stats? What did you think of the experience overall? How challenging was it? Did you have fun? (Obviously important)

By the way I'm not talking about the Harvard SSP or anything like that; I'm speaking of the one in Southern California/New Mexico.

haha yeah i'm applying to it, and i want to know the same things. I have my application basically done, and reworking a couple of the essays, does anyone have any pointers or any veterans want to give insight?

I'm applying as well.

I should start on my essay soon, lol.

oh and does anyone know approx how many sophomores get accepted each yr? i'm so nervous :) heh

I went to this program last summer and had a blast. I'd definitely apply if you are interested in science. I think about 1/3 of applicants get accepted...as for sophomores, I don't think many get admitted. I applied as one and get offered deferred admissions for next year. At Ojai we only had 1 sophomore, but I think there were more at Socorro. If you all have anymore questions feel free to ask =)

I know how many are admitted, but how selective is it, that is, are the applicants extremely self-selective in the first place, thereby making admission nearly impossible anyway? I am from NY, and my GPA is about 3.95, which puts me in the top 10% (our school only does decile), and I will have taken 9 AP Exams by the end of junior year, and 16 by the end of senior year (we already did course scheduling at my school). My PSAT is 222 (72 CR, 80 M, 70 W). My SAT is mid-2200s, and SAT 2s are 800 and 790 in Math Level 2 and Physics, respectively. I have gotten 5s on all five APs which I have taken so far (AP Physics B, AP Physics Mech and E&M, AP Stats, AP World History). I have good recommendations, good ECs, a bit of previous research experience, and good responses in the student section of the app (I've been working on it for a while).

Thus, my question is this: would somebody with my stats have a decent chance at admission.

Doctorx017, I think you have GREAT shots :D If you don't get in, who will? :D

could someone like read my stats too?

I'm currently a sophomore, but am taking Calculus BC. I have a 4.0uw on a 4.0 scale, and a 4.35 on a 4.5 scale (a+ is 4.5), ranked in the top 5(They don't tell us our rank yet). As far math and sciences go, I've taken honors biology, honors chemistry, computer science, math analysis honors, AP calculus BC, AP Statistics, and Discrete math. All other classes are honors/AP as well. My PSAT is 221 (75 CR, 80 M, 66 W), I have a SAT from seventh grade, (560V, 730M), and SAT II Bio (760). I have solid recommendations, some math research experience, and what I consider pretty strong ECs, including Science and Math competitions as well as nonacademic stuff.

^You have pretty impressive stats, but considering that you're a sophomore your chances are probably slim (especially since you haven't taken physics yet either). I would apply anyway, because you at least have a chance of getting deferred admission for next summer.

I still don't know whether I'm going to apply so I can't evaluate my recommendations (although my teachers do generally like me) or essay responses, but can someone evaluate my stats?
I am a junior from MD who will be taking AP Calculus BC next year (which I know will probably hurt me). I am currently in Honors Physics and AP Biology, both of which I got A's in for the first semester. Took AP US Government & Politics last year (the only AP sophomores can take at my school) and got a 5. All other classes this year are Honors/AP.
GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.7 W
PSAT: 71Cr 80M 78W (229)
SAT: 780Cr 800M 800W (2380)
I have generally pretty strong ECs, but am weak in math/science competitions and research. I'm hoping that my scores, grades, and possibly essays and recs will make up for it.
I'm also female. Dunno how much this helps.

You're in...your standardized test scores are excellent, and I doubt they will punish you for not taking BC until next year (they specifically say that students planning on taking calc should apply, and it is not a problem it you haven't yet). They have 35% acceptance, which is pretty high especially if you apply early to both campuses. Good luck.

Does anyone else who has done the program want to comment?

I second Ruella's request.

Also, if you were accepted/attended, will you post information about how the campuses were, and/or stats?

Thanks.

Also, does anybody know what the gender ratio is?

HOPEFULLY 1:1!!

V_V, I know it's going to end up being like 1:7 males.

since not very many people actually go each year...

CCers who applied - will you post your gender/campus?

ME: M/both

I WILL be applying but haven't finished my app yet so I probably won't make the early deadline, but:

Ruella76: female, both

me: female, both

oh lovely, im applying too. what do you think of my stats?

Relevent Classes this year-
AP Physics
AP Calc AB

Taken biology and freshmen physics and all lower math classes.

Reccs will be quite good. I am doing the third optional recc with my math club advisor (it is going to be fantastic.) I have some math competition experience (AIME 5 as sophomore) and am president of math club.

PSAT 225
SAT II WH 760
Only 1 AP - World History 5

Hi. A friend told me about this thread. I'm an alumna, you see. And that question about the gender ratio is pretty funny. Last year, it was 2:1 male to female for both campuses (I think). Not too bad.

I personally don't think anyone should worry too much about "stats". They're not really looking for perfect scores or a million APs on your transcript. They're looking for "passion." Yeah, it's a rather elusive quality. My only good advice is probably to get really good recommendations. A bad one can't break your application, but a good one can make it.

Hey, I'm a female applying too.

Quick question--what if you haven't taken a physics class in hs yet? (I did honors physics in 8th grade, but I suppose that doesn't count-no hs credit). I think I'd be able learn the material as taught it; I'm familiar with the basics etc...but will this lower my chances? I don't want them to think that I have no interest in the subject; I just haven't had room in my sched. and I want to take Physics C senior year anyways...

So, like my dear friend who posted two messages above me, I was fortunate enough to find myself in sunny Socorro during the summer of '06.

Some answers, in no particular order:

(as already stated) 2:1 gender ratio at both campuses. Could have been worse.

I had taken physics and calculus in 11th grade, I'd say a majority of everyone had, but not everyone. That's the wonder of the program, for every person that I could help with physics, there was another who could help me with programming!

There were two sophomores (rising juniors) at Socorro, and two others who were sophomores (rising seniors).

Socorro is in the middle of the desert. The sky is HUGE. There were nights when I couldn't point out the "big dipper" because I could see so many hundreds and thousands more stars than I was used to. It was like pointing out "the big dipper that sunk into the pot of soup."

I learned a ton though, and I met some really fantastic people. And look at me now, more than six months later, I'm still keeping in touch with a ton of them.

Oh, and the field trips were AMAZING.

As for everyone who's said "what do you think of my stats?!?" I think they're scary. In a good way, of course. Chill out. Please? This website is unhealthy enough as it is. I mean, good scores certainly won't hurt your application, but there's more to it than that. Good reccomendations, that sort of thing. I remember my essays were really random.

So, now that I've written half an encyclopedia, I'll go away. But this tells me that it'll send me an email whenever someone posts, so I guess I'll be back. Until then, adieu.
