Summer Science Program (SSP) 2009

gah im so anxious! ill cry for joy if i get in

yeah omg -__-.

i actually had a dream last night that even though i submitted my app after the early deadline i got a reply early saying that because my app was so good (highly idealized, dont laugh) that i got it. and i remember i jumped for joy because i knew what i was doing this summer. -____-

when i woke up, needless to say, i was really sad.

hey QuantumArbiter if you should include me too! I'm so hyped by the prospect of College Confidential Clique on the first day of camp;)

well, weve already seen quite a few people on these boards, so if all of them end up going, you might end up having half of a campus full of cc people haha.

but if i get in, id love to contact people going to the same campus as me before we actually go. itd be a good change of pace from the dummys i go to school with.

@quantum- I was just joking! I don't know the names of every CCer who applied to SSP either. Relax!

@socks- You're not the only dreamer out here either! I had a crazy one this morning...

And Happy Holi to everyone!(Though you probably don't know what it is :p)

Haha, gary7, I don't know what Holi is, but I do know that on Sunday ALL my Indian friends went to some party, updated their Facebook statuses with "OMG OMG HOLI WAS AMAZING" and came back on Monday with paint on their faces and clothes. So if that's today, happy Holi :P

In other news, more anxiety, but you knew that. I'd hoped we'd know by now!

i'm getting so anxious, its almost rediculous!

especially because i know an alum who just got an email yesterday updating all ssp alumni and it said... drum roll please: the committee has just finished reviewing and deciding on the first round of applicants and is now starting the next round!!!!

that means emails should be coming soon! i'm so nervous!

ARE YOU SERIOUS. Oh god. ;____;

I think I just died. Well, okay. I guess I should go attempt to fall in love with another program I can still do in case I don't get in.

Also, it's really awkward to think the committee was reading my application and talking about it amongst themselves. um.

both of you scared the living "bejesus" out of me!

"ARE YOU SERIOUS. Oh god. ;____;"...blank two lines...
i was dumbstruck for a minute, trying to read the next line.

Thanks for the heart attack, coin ;)

@Time's: Please let it be soon!

It is a little awkward to think that a committe of people read my essays and talked to each other about them. I mean, the only person that saw those essays before I sent them in was my mother. It's strange to think that a bunch of people in NC know more about me than do the teenagers I pass everyday in the halls at school - I'm the quiet, shy type :).

Hahah. Oops. Sorry guys ;) I post before I think, clearly.

edit: Another embarrassing thing is that I just looked over my essays again with fresh eyes and I already see a couple of mistakes. Gah!! I don't know how I missed them before.

Here's the relevant section of the Universal Times:
Student Admissions in Home Stretch
The application deadline is March 20. As of this writing 135 would-be SSPers have submitted completed applications, and another 400+ have completed our long online form. We expect over 250 applications again this year for the 72 spots. The six members of the Admissions Committee are hard at work now scoring the second round. Dr. Donald Davis, new to SSP as Socorro Academic Director, wrote: “It is very impressive to see the quality of students, many of whom have incredible records already. Gives one hope for America.”

wait, does this mean that we will get our responses tomorrow??

gah omg im so scaredd ima get rejected. pianista,
what do you mean by your quote thing. first it says "400+" then it says "we expect 250 applications"
so..theres 250 applications? for 72 spots?

/me faints

And coin, forget the pirated holi's they play in the US! If you ever decide to come to India, make sure you have Holi on the list :D It's the most awesome colourful amazing and DIRTY festival in the whole world!

Dude. I want to go to India so badly. Like you have no idea. I went to my town's celebration of Diwali once (we have a really big Indian population--though it was a little awks since I was the one of the only non-Indians there) and it was so ridiculously amazing, I can only imagine what the real one would be like.

Diwali? It looks wonderful. But unfortunately, its hugely overdone now. Imagine the New year eve's midnight continuously for 2 days! I highly enjoy 'enjoying' but I do draw a line where you cause such a damned amount of pollution that the air itself changes in composition altogether. And for asthamatics like me, its TERRIBLE. I have to really take my inhalers every 4 hours or so when Diwali's around.... I am a firm supporter of no crackers on diwali, though if I'm in the US, I'll probably burst every cracker I can lay my hands on.

And seriously want to go to the US too! One of the reasons I'd love to be a part of SSP :)

Aww, really? Imagining New Year's Eve at midnight for 2 days only makes me think FUN, but I can definitely see your point with the pollution and dang, that must suck to be asthmatic =</p>

OH OH and I've seen home videos of snippets of Indian weddings. Awesome awesome awesome. If I get rich one day, I swear. Haha god, y'all just have this amazingly vibrant culture that's so interesting, I love it.

Well then I hope you get in! The mountains and gorgeous landscapes of NM/CA would definitely be a great first impression of the US :D

Thanks coin! But admission to SSP isn't the only factor. The dates suck! I have a 2 week summer training camp in IIT Mumbai for my KVPY fellowship. And I heard that if you don't attend it they cancel your fellowship. Thats like a $10000 loss <_< Besides I'm CERTAIN to miss my school exams coz of KVPY, though I don't mind it as long as the grumpy old Principal agrees.
And seriously, Indian weddings are fantastic! I'm an atheist but still I love the Indian culture and would most certainly have an Indian wedding!
About asthma, don't worry it doesn't suck as much. And I love challenging myself and overexerting myself everytime :p
Hope the SSP guys don't take it against me :(

Anyways, disregarding the fact that two Indians are talking about celebrating holidays and what not amidst a potential SSP rejection slaughter ;),
can someone please answer tomjonestheman's question about the "400+" but "expecting 250 applications" paradox?!
