Summer Science Program (SSP) 2009

of course not. but theres no way every single word that you have is so important that you cant cut anything. in fact, i got my thing down to 498 after having it at around 650 originally. and i think that 498 words did me a lot more justice than the original 650 could in every respect.

Derivate: Bleh i hope not xD I had like 560 words for #4 and I had trouble cutting it down so I just left it that way it was.
dolcevalse: you're not the only one. I don't think I have a chance to get in either =/.Especially since my transcript shows that my english/humanities grades are better than my science/math grades.

back to my earlier question,
anyone know when next set of decisions will be sent out?
(for those deferred from early)

last years thread shows that round one was out around this time, and that second round was out at the end of march/early april, so it should be relatively similar.

i just hope i get in roflrofl. or ill be a hobo during the summer, but at least then i could start apps early.

and good luck to you tomjones.

Derivate -- re: what was strongest on my application -- I have great scores, stats and ECs, which was obviously a point in my favor, but less than half of those ECs are science-related, which was probably a point against me, as I definitely don't have as much of a background in science as many of my peers at SSP probably will have. My recs were decent, nothing special. I think what pulled me through was my essays; while I didn't have much in terms of content (haha my great achievement was pulling through my procrastinatory tendencies and learning how to play the guitar, and my why I'm unique section was me rambling about how I want to be Leonardo Da Vinci) I think I was able to communicate my enthusiasm for SSP and my desire to learn more about science very effectively.

Oh, and I think I was paranoid and cut down my words so like, all of them were 1 or 2 words under.

In other news, I still can't believe I got in. o_O

Quote-why I'm unique section was me rambling about how I want to be Leonardo Da Vinci

I am a lot like you I guess hehe. I can write right to left and upside down with ease like Leo, make grand invention plans in my head and nerdy stuff like that..... Best of all I might have broken a code by Leo or maybe Newton.. I mentioned it on my app in a humorous way... I'll show you in a PM if you want. It might look a little stupid and you'd really need some imagination and a lil background on grail history for it :p

Yeah, I prolly got rejected (I'm being pragmatic here). I had my 500 word essay with like 600 words. Maybe even 650. I had to explain a certain thing i invented for my unique essay. I needed all those words to make it seem legit.
But I tried to make it as interesting as possible tho. Oh well, at least they all fit in one page . . .

gah, the email said next week ("progress report")
im scared and nervous and anxious

Hi, I just signed up though I've been reading the forums for a while (especially this topic).

I was deferred on Friday as well. I'm wondering about our chances- this means we go up against the third (might be second, but seems a bit late for that) round applicants. Are these the people who are so overqualified they didn't need to send in their apps early, or the ones who don't care as much and so didn't bother sending their apps in early?

Also, reading through last year's thread, it appears deferral is a new part of the process. The email said about a third were deferred; I wonder if the other folks were equally admitted and rejected or not.

Well, hopefully we've been up against the best, right?

haha. i did exactly what coin did. my responses were all 249 words except for my number 4, which was 498 words haha.

dang it i want to know already ahhhh.

yea, I think this deferral thing is a new process this year. ahhhhh hope I get in. im trusting the statement of "progress report next week" so ill be expecting a final decision next week..

^ Well at least you sent your application. I'm so stupid for procrastinating.

I cannot believe they want it single spaced, that will be hard to read. What did you guys make your margin?

Ah it's taking me 5 minutes to cut down 5 words. This really is the hardest part of the process.

To those who are deferred, I'm sure quite a number of kids would decline their offers due to newly-arisen conflicts or other plans. I agree that SSP is a wonderful experience and I would be honored and happy to attend; but if things work out, I would rather pursue my true interest--a summer of research.

I'm keeping track of everything for posterity ;)

@Derivate - I ended up putting the font to 9.5 and shrinking the margins slightly to keep my essays at two pages. It was a very readable font, though :)

Did anyone apply for Financial Aid for those who got in?

Did any of the the people who have been rejected/waitlisted/deferred so far apply last year as a sophomore? I'm curious to see how favorably they look on people who reapply.

@velleity same here. I now realize that it's unlikely for me to get good research at home but I'll try to still get something going, and I would probably choose to do that over SSP if I got that rare opportunity.

Congratulations on everyone who got in! I wish I could( I haven't sent my application yet, so procrastinated).
@bookworm: Congratulations! But why don't you reply my message I sent to you a long time ago??

I know I asked this previously, but I did not get a respinse:

What if my teacher just sealed the envelope enclosed with his letter but didn't sign the flap. Is that what SSP means by sealing, or do they want a signature?

Wait, do all essays need to be in two pages only? I had a separate page for each essay . . . 5 separate pages for each essay (5, 6, and 7 were in one page).
