Summer Science Program (SSP) 2009

Thanks, barem. Also, I'm wondering if there's a penalty for having another person from your school apply. Someone else from my school had applied in first or second round. I have much better stats than him, but his stats are quite impressive already. I only just submitted my app; if he is accepted, will my app be an auto-reject? :( My stats are definitely better, teacher recs better.

I think last year at one of the camps two people from the same school both got in. You shouldn't worry too much, but also know that SSP is looking for more than a math whiz.

Haha, do I have great timing or what?
I went to SSP last year, and I am one of the two people who got in from the same school - we even had the same first name!

Your application will definitely **NOT **be an auto-reject just because someone else from your school is already in.

^
oo! Willing to share a bit of your experience?

Thanks so much, A.Small.Prayer. Made me much less worried. :)
My friend also went to SSP last year. He recommended me to apply! Did you go to Socorro or Ojai?

Hey I'll be the only one ever from our school to apply. I think . . . I suppose its a good thing?

I'm not sure if others in my school have applied in the past, but i know there's a couple applying this year.

Ha ha ended up paying $17.50 for postal fees. It was either that or pay the standard 4 dollars and have a risk of it being delayed until Saturday.

yeah I don't like how 2-day service isn't "guaranteed" to be two days. But the mom of a friend of mine who works for the post office says that they are almost always guaranteed, but usps doesn't want to be liable.

The other person from my school got in, and I'm a sophomore. I'm kinda worried. :(

gahh i'm dying waiting for a response from ssp. now that i've been rejected from tasp, ssp is my last hope!

but if all else fails i still have opportunities to volunteer abroad.

@bks: Well if you get rejected, at least you have another shot at it next year. We juniors don't.

yeah. I guess that's part of their reasoning for letting in less sophomores.
Good luck to all you juniors!

Well, to answer previous questions, I went to Ojai.
As for the experience...well, it was just a blurry of work and fun. Be prepared to have VERY little sleep.

As for those of you who are worried, definitely have a back up plan!
I have a friend who got rejected to SSP, but went to Boston University's Research Internship. She submitted her research in the Intel Science Competition and became a Semi-Finalist! So definitely have something to rely on for the summer because you'll never know what'll happen.

Good luck everyone!

Well, I found out today I got into SIMONS, though I'm not sure wether I prefer it or SSP yet. Do you think it's worth emailing them asking for my decision? I was previously deferred, though they said I'd get an update in about a week (this was last Friday). Also, there are two people from my school applying, for whoever's interested. I was deferred and the other guy sent his app in for the second round.

dude same here, i got deferred, he said i would get an update this week..so worried and anxious ahhhhhhhhhhhgahhhhhalsdfjlksdajflksadj. This is pretty much my last chance, so I want to get in soo bad. this wait is killing me. And yea, I applied to Boston University Internship as well.

I kinda wish they'd just make a decision, for better or worse. It'll be odd if we get our acceptance/rejections this week, though, if they waited on us so they could check the quality of the applicants in other rounds, since second round decisions don't come out until beginning of April, if the other folks here are right. Maybe they just ran out of time and decided to send out some notifications and gave us the deferrals so we didn't panic?

Also, when did you send in your app? Mine was received on the 20th, so my (granted, unlikely) theory would gain credence if you sent yours in last minute as well.

I think mine was received on the 18th/19th. And I got an email saying my application was complete on the 22nd. Also, I got the email saying I was deferred on March 13th, in the morning. How bout you?
I want to find out nowwww!!!111
and hopefully get accepted...

Confirmation of materials on the 22nd, deferral on the 13th, during second period, so about 9 (PST). I agree, ones, exclamation points, and all.

Did any of you accepted folk get your confirmation email on the 22nd? I'm hoping they just got more apps than they were expecting.

wait, second round applicants recieve decision in April!>!?
I thouhgt we'd be getting it this Friday (as was the case for first round applicants last week)
AHHH!!! I DONT WANT TO WAIT!! Patience is NOT my strongest virtue!
