Summer Science Program (SSP) 2009

^ Congrats (ISEF is pretty cool)! What’s your project about?

it’s a math project relating population growth with a probability game(very similiar project as the one I wish to do at Clark)

didn’t you say you went to ISEF in gr9? This is my first science fair ever but I already got to know a lot of amazing people in the selection process. I’m so looking forward to Reno!

Hey I got a few questions. When was the first deadline for ISEF? Was it like November or October? And what do you have to do? Poster/research report/interview?
I’m currently doing a math research project in the field of knot theory, with my math professor. Would I need to send in my research project and make a poster and all that before the end of this year?
Good luck at Reno, then.

^
I think you’re getting it mixed up with Intel STS(which you could very well do too). That involves you submitting your research paper with an application. The deadline for that is in November. [Intel Science Talent Search (STS)](http://www.societyforscience.org/sts/index.asp)

ISEF you go to based on how well you did at your regional science fair. You just need to submit a project proposal sometime toward the end of this year. After that, all you really need to do is make sure you have a poster on fair day. =D

check with your regional science fair coordinator people.

Oh, congrats to everyone who’s going to SSP this year!!! You guys are going to have an amazing time. I can feel it already.

I’m from Socorro 2008 so feel free to ask me ANY questions you have about SSP, college apps, or life in general. I need something to distract me from the monotony of second semester senior year. haha

I don’t check here all that often so you should probably pm me. I’ll get to you faster!

I turned my application in on the last day. I got an email a few days ago saying I was waitlisted (which I’m guessing is in Round 3) =(. Although, I still am hoping some more people drop. But there’s always ISEF to look forward to :D.

Congrats to everyone that got in!

I’m also curious about ISEF. Never really had science fairs to enter into, so maybe I’ll do something for STS…

Do it, ISEF is SSSOOO much fun!
gonna miss entering as an individual this year but teams are fun

thanks, book_worm.
got stuff in the mail today, how exciting~

Sorry to detract from SSP, but about ISEF/STS, how difficult would it be to actually be a finalist/winner?

I haven’t really had any previous experience with science fairs. Do they grade holistically based upon how clearly I’ve communicated my findings/results?

And since it’s due in November…it would be too late to mention to colleges I’m applying to Early? (since I’m going to be a senior)

At my regional, which attracts around 400 people (1 major university), they rank you in several categories- communication, background knowledge, project design etc. This is for ISEF. It usually happens in early march of the spring semester. STS is different. I don’t know much about it.

I was wondering about the same. Could working on a project but not going to the fair yet still be good for college apps?

Also wondering how to get started on it. Physics teacher with PhD has agreed to help me with a project, but now I need to find an actual topic and the deadline to start registering for next year.

Also wondering. also, what’s the difference between Intel, ISEF, STS, and Siemens-Westinghouse? How would one go about finding research topic/mentor?

Maybe you could just ask him if he has any ideas in his research topic? Or get some ideas from your physics class if you are taking one. Personally, I’m doing math research with my math professor, who I met from my college math class last semester.

Intel ISEF and STS are different in that STS is only for seniors.
Siemens, however, is a whole different competition.
[Siemens Foundation - Competition Calendar](<a href=“Siemens Foundation - Siemens US”>Siemens Foundation - Siemens US)
That site has lots of info, including registration dates, deadlines, etc. The deadline is October 1st, 2009. Deadline for STS is November 19th. Not quite sure about ISEF…

I think I will try to compete in all 3…though I have a math research project (and I’m sure you can use math research right?) Though if SSP provides me with opportunities for a more science based research project…then I might use that.

What constitutes as ¨research¨? Are you really finding new things that have never before been published? Or is it just a rehash of something more obscure? Or an elaboration upon previous foundations? How did you choose your topic (knot theory)?

Sorry for having so many questions…xD

hey I am going to SSP. just got the rejection from MITES…
I guess I am not a minority for sure (however I am one of the 4 only asians in my high school), cuz both MITES and YESS rejected me. self-esteem dropping rapidly right now.

are MITES and YESS fun? Do they go in depth research, or is it more like a “Hey, look, science is cool!” kind of thing?

I got rejected from YESS too (prob cause I’m asian). eh…I don’t really believe in programs that are targeted towards certain minorities only…they should be based on merit alone.

I’m a minority and I got accepted by YESS, and I’m sure my ethnicity had a good bit to do with it. While I’m definitely happy that some programs target minorities (better odds for me) I still have to agree with you tomjonesistheman. I really do think that things should be based off of merit (and maybe charcter too).

just wasted 2 hours on CC looking over threads. partially because I am very despondent today due to the rejection letter from MITES… MIT is still my dream school and spending 6weeks there is very appealling obviously to me. but I am sure I will have a more intense and rigorous academic experience at SSP. so I guess I should just settle down and set my mind on SSP.

can’t wait to see all of you Ojal ppl!!!
