Summer Science Program (SSP) 2009

Any Socorro people bringing their tennis rackets? I got to keep my game up.

id want to play tennis at socorro, but im not too keen on bringing rackets over there considering how much stuff well have already. but if a lot of people are gonna play i might.

How often do you swim at Socorro?

Eh, I’ll do a final updated list of acceptances/attending after everyone’s sure about going. I’m too lazy to do anything right now ;)

I’m probably not bringing much, because I’m flying in - luggage weight/size restrictions. Dumb!!

Any tennis players going to Ojai?

Bring your gear anyway. Our school closed due to a “probable” case of swine flu, so AP Spanish was rescheduled! But of course, the CDC in Atlanta Georgia made an update saying large public schools should not be closed to small numbers of reported cases, and school was openned on the next day… just in time for BC Calc D:

awww, naw, bc calc was sooooooo easy this year. the free response was super fun except for #6 (which was super ■■■ cuz i self studied but didnt know series).

ap spanish is so ■■■ though. im glad im never taking that again (taking spanish b sl next monday and thats gonna be a cakewalk)

hmm, what facilities are there to use at socorro anyways (other than like a tennis court and whatnot).

^^^agreed about BC

didnt figure out #6 til like 15 minutes after I handed my test in.

ill ask this again.

anyone in ib? if we want to use the orbit determination for ee, what do we have to change and is it readibly done?

No I am not in IB, but I just might extend to my program for a science research project…though it’s too early to see if I will or not.
And I remember the BC Calc from last year, it was a *****
But luckily, the curve is huge.
Anyone else take 3 exams today? (Bio, Mech, E/M). Bio was ok. My teacher sucked, so the FR was hard for me. Mech was easy, cept for some of the FR…like #2
and E/M was just ■■■

Um I’m probably bringing my racket, but I’m not very good… (I’d still be willing to play of course)

Is SSP really prestigious and recognized?
I am so excited that I will be a part of this program this year but no one around me seems to have heard about SSP…

that’s cause its not well known. not everyone knows about these summer programs. ask them about RSI, arguably the most prestigious high school summer research program. they prob don’t know about that either.
just check out the statistics on how many people got into top tier colleges, from ssp. pretty crazy, compared to the normal percentages

dude, post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy man
the fact that a lot of people who go to SSP make it into strong colleges says nothing other than there are strong students who apply to SSP (and then get in)
I’m not saying SSP is not prestigious, but I doubt it has a significant effect on your application (the fact that you got into SSP means you have the qualities that such colleges would be looking for)

^ Very true. Klebian has a point there.

Hey guys, sorry this is kind of off topic, but how many suitcases/bags should you bring? The packing list looks pretty extensive and I don’t know how much room it will all take.

prob 1 big suitcase and a backpack.

I would assume SSP was quite prestigious a few decades ago, considering that people like Feynman would often visit during the time period. SSP was fading in the late 90’s, but alumni are now in control of the program and are rejuvenating the program. So for the next few years, SSP is probably going to become more and more well-known.

aaaa i didnt know that haha
the most important thing for me though is learning during summer and having fun while doing it, and i think that i found the right place for me. im getting so excited~~!!
is anyone else arriving at saturday night??
i couldnt find a flight for sunday so i might have to stay in the airport for like 17 hours straight! haha that’s gotta be fun…
only 30 or so days left!!
good luck everyone with aps and sats… i know i need them haha especially with chem!

@eunjilee90
same here. have to stay at LAX overnight as well. T-T
heck, the jet lag’s gonna kill me with the 14 hour time difference.
but it should be worthwhile for the hopefully amazing summer ahead…so excited :D

btw, you going to socorro right?
