Summer Science Program (SSP) 2010

How does MIT look at people accepted to SSP? Their site says that they “co-sponsor” the program…

Deferred is not the same as waitlisted. Deferred means they have deferred, or postponed, making a decision about your admission…in this case, he said for about a week.

:(( Does anybodyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy know when they are going to send the decisions to those who are defferred? :(( I am soooooooooooo nervous now :(( It is one week already T_T Can someone ask Mr. Bowdon please?

I really don’t know… Why don’t you want to ask him yourself?

I just declined my acceptance. so goodluck waitlisters!

@lc: Well I emailed him, but no reply :(

…he will e-mail you back whenever he has a answer, I think. :(

My 16 year-old daughter got in too, and I was shocked because even though she’s both a high school student and college student (community college; has earned 50 quarter credits), her grades in 9th & 10th grade were pretty lousy (GPA was around 2.5). The first semester this year her GPA was 2.9 and the past semester was 3.4. I guess her high GPA in her college classes (3.8 & Dean’s List) helped, and I know her essay was outstanding, but I never thought she’d have a chance, although I thought it was worth a shot.

No reply for any deferrees yet :frowning: So suspenseful!

Second email!!!:

Dear …,

The Admissions Committee has voted to place your application on the Alternate List for the 2010 Summer Science Program. We are confident that you are qualified for and prepared to benefit from SSP. However, because we received a record 532 applicants for only 72 positions, we cannot admit every qualified applicant.

Our enrollment process is not complete. We await confirmation of enrollment from students who were recently offered admission. While we cannot predict the probability, there is some chance that you will be offered admission sometime in the next 2-3 weeks. If so, I will email you immediately. If you have not heard from me by May 15, it is unlikely that you will be admitted.

We understand that you might need to make definite summer plans before we have resolved your status. If and when you wish to withdraw your application from further consideration, please let me know by replying to this email.

Congratulations on your fine record, and thank you for your patience. Although this decision may be disappointing to you, I hope that you see it as a positive response to your qualifications. This outcome reflects the extremely strong applicant group from around the world, rather than any particular weakness in your preparation.

Best regards,
Richard Bowdon
SSP Executive Director

Yeah, it looks like SSP doesn’t really care about grades, as long as you have something to offset it.

lol …i’m in the same boat. best of luck to us both then…

anyone know how likely we are to get off of the waitlist? im on the edge here =.=

Well, quite a few people (that I personally know or that are on CC or facebook) are considering denying the admission, so there’s definitely a strong chance that at least three waitlisters will be accepted. BUT, I don’t know how deep the wait list is, and the actual number admitted of course depends on whether those people accepted will deny admissions.

did anyone ask him about financial aid? it has been almost two weeks now…

^yeah, he got mine last saturday but i havent heard back from him… i was wondering if anyone had gotten their financial aid as well? did you ask him?

^haha weird. sorry to double post again but i just got the email with financial aid. the time it arrived says 8:25pm, i posted at 8:26! heh. didnt get very much… oh well. i think i’ll still be going.

I just got that, too! Did they cover all your need?

well they gave me $500. i think i’ll still be able to attend with that, it just puts more of a strain on my family you know?

what about you??

my family has really low income ( about 20K), so they gave me a almost free ride( need to pay $100 myself) plus air ticket
