Summer Science Program (SSP) 2013

Hey - I was wondering if anyone knows how much of the SAT score reports we have to send in. It says we can just send in printouts of the scores, but does that mean the full score report, or the little blurb collegeboard gives you, or just part of the full score report? A little confused -_- thanks :)

I just sent the front page with the score and the breakdown, i didn’t send the full thing in

Ahhhhhh you guys are all so dedicated…
I’m working extremely hard on my app, although I am much under qualified then everyone else…
I’m a Sophomore, PSAT 177, and doesn’t have anything for Physics or Calculus… (I am, however, in Algebra II H/Precalc H) I think they want us to go there, learn, and have a great time, right?

I hope it’s the attitude and sincerity that gets you in, because my nonexistent credentials wouldn’t definitely not get me anywhere…

@raiders97
lol I was going to send in the whole thing just in case and that would have been kind of awkward… it’s got my essay and scoring guidelines and stuff. They’re probably not interested.

@nobody426 :

just keep in mind, though, that last year at Westmont everyone had experience in physics or calc (70% both), even our sophomores

So for SAT scores, does anyone know for sure whether we send the full unofficial report or if we can just send a screenshot of front page?

And for listing topics covered in math or physics, can we generalize the list or do we have to be specific? For example, could I just put “Principles of Integral Evaluation” or do I have to list each technique learned “Integration by parts, integration by partial fractions, etc?”

I just got my february 9th ACT score (36…) and i’m probably only going to send my ACT and my SAT II Chem (790). I hope that’s not too little. I’ve read enough that the scores won’t make or break the app… The one thing i am worried about slightly is that I don’t have enough personality in mine. My parents tend to be pushy when it gets to editing and they always want me to be formal… And when I like to be lightly humored i can be.

For the above, i think i read that both works, and it can be just the Principles of Integral Evaluation. But i’m a fellow applicant, so a word from alumni would be reassuring.

Sending my app tomorrow, probably going to forget about it for the next two-ish months, then either be pleasantly surprised or disappointed.

Just random, but I have a friend who hasn’t even started the short answer and the app’s due by this friday. LOLOLOL

@ Nobody426 eh. West Lafayette is a better place to see stars than Columbus… Boilermakers FTW (I lived there for two ish years)

Third post in like 15 minutes, i gotta control myself… Anyways. Not to be discouraging,
but what is really discouraging is there are 8 applicants just in our school district, I know all of them, and they’re all asian, including me. Wowee.

Around how many applications did they receive last year? and is it an upwards trend? Thanks.

My essay questions are coming along!

Need some advice, though. What do you think about these topics for my essay?

Favorite science: talked about computational neuroscience
Topics: just listed everything in each class I took, up to Multivariable Calc
Fun activity: genealogy (fun for me at least haha)
Background: talked about how I come from a very sports-focused family and how it took me a while to find my niche, playing like 10 different sports

And I still have yet to write the last one  still stuck on that…

Any advice on that question from alumni?

finished my essays…yay! Question: on the application it only asks for SAT CR and Math…does this mean they don’t look at your WR score? Should I send my second SAT results too, that have a higher writing score but similar CR+M scores? Or just send the one with higher CR+M?

I’d assume single-sided.

@ chrisLieto: ~ 650 applications. the year before had around 670, so i think it’s been holding fairly steady (applications increased sharply after spp announced its affiliation with mit)

@ biovball: those essays sound good, consider perhaps commenting on a class you really liked instead of simply listing them… anything to show your personality :)

you can write about whatever you want! consider a possible “hook”–low income, rural area, etc, not necessarily race-- and how it affected your pursuit of your passions; giving context is great and can contribute to your memorability, anything that’s interesting or ties together the rest of your application. just have fun!

@ readyfor2014: whatever will make you happy :)don’t overthink scores. they only represent one aspect of you.

@fireroy830: I sent the whole darn packet, not sure if that was kind of dinky. i’d say the front page probably works too, as far as I can remember the other pages just give percentiles or something???

for the classes question, again, you have to get into the minds of the readers. the point of them asking such a question, isn’t, i don’t think, to know every single math/science topic you’ve ever learned–they can get that from your transcript. i mean, you should probably mention calc/phys, those are biggies, but feel free to comment on special circumstances that led you to take the class, how you overcame challenges, etc.

ahh, sorry I’ve been away from this for a while. I can answer any questions from now on too, but lol I don’t want to backtrack since saffysparkles has already answered them all!

Okay, hpyscm, since you’re open to questions: I recall you wrote your “interest” essay on biology, so it’s definitely fine to write about something non-physics/astronomy-related, right? I wrote mine on neurobiology.

I’m applying too! I sent in everything last week because I was REALLY worried about leaving it last minute o.O

I’m really passionate about science and am a part of lots of science clubs not to buff up my college apps but because I genuinely enjoy them. I even started a program for kids at my local library to learn about planets.

My grades dipped really badly my sophomore year because I moved from Texas to California. I don’t know if they will take that into consideration…I really hope so! This year I have all A’s and 2 B’s (but they’re AP classes)…I want to get in so FREAKING MUCH! It sounds like such a great experience! :)

Mr. Maximus, I also wrote mine on biology - study of genomics and genetic engineering. I thought it was better to be honest about my current interest than to just claim I was an expert on astrophysics.

Just sent my app in on the late UPS shift…good luck to everyone!
