Summer Science Program (SSP) 2014

Hi there! Since I haven't found any SSP threads for 2014, I thought I would start one myself. So I made a list for possible discussions...

-Admission Tips
-Admission Tips (for international students & sophomores)
-Your stats (GPA, standardized tests, etc.) for ssp 2014
-Where ssp students are coming from
-Words of encouragement from former ssp student
-What is the one most beneficial thing you gained from ssp? (to ssp alum)

Feel free to add any other discussions you think would be relevant!

It seems to me that SSP has omitred the requirement for date of birth this year (in the past years, applicants must be under 18 by August 1 of the year they attend the program if accepted.) Can anyone confirm this?

I attended SSP last summer, and I’m pretty sure that someone at my campus turned 18 during the program, so I don’t think they have that requirement.

As for the most beneficial thing that I gained at SSP, it was everything. SSP made me more confident about what I want to study and what I want to do with my life. I honestly loved every minute of SSP. I learned a lot about myself. I learned that I really don’t need that much sleep to function. It was such a great opportunity, I had a blast.

I strongly encourage anyone who’s interested to apply. I started reading the SSP 2013 forum after I applied, and based on what I read I didn’t think that I would get in. I had good grades but my PSAT score was on the lower end of what I’d seen on the forum. I didn’t think that I had a chance, but I got in. So I encourage everyone to apply, even if it seems unlikely. Feel free to ask me any questions, I honestly love talking about SSP.

I am considering SSP and I will likely apply.

When can we apply for SSP? Junior Year? OR Senior Year?

You can apply as a sophomore or junior but if you are a sophomore, you have a slim chance.

Ohh. Thank You :-)

Ok I’m confused…it’s saying that I need to have an account to access the application, “starting your application.” But where on the website can you create an account?? Thanks!!

hey petrawinklevoss i think i know whats wrong:
“Note: Applications for 2013 are closed. Applications open each year about Dec. 15 and close about March 1.”

Hey thanks starchow! I have one more question for you guys…the application says that we have to have a science teacher recommendation. Although I’m doing well in my physics class this year, my teacher doesn’t seem to like me, I think because I’m peppy and he’s kind of a grumpy person (he’s going through a tough time in his personal life right now) and he thinks I have no common sense (which is somewhat true). Should I still bother applying? Can I ask my AP Statistics and AP Calc Teacher who both like me? I really don’t want to ask someone who dislikes me for a recommendation…that’s just awkward. Also, I’m not great at following instructions, like in my physics class I’m terrible with this mousetrap car we had to build. Should I still bother applying? I work hard and I’m determined, but I don’t want to be a nuisance once I get there. Thank you!

I also have a question somewhat similar to petra’s. Would it raise some flags if I submitted a recommendation from my Chem teacher instead of my Physics teacher?

I am an international student and I never took any of the standardized tests (PSAT, SAT). On the application, it says these tests are required…is it a problem if a student has taken these? What should I do?

@BeyondTheSky The test scores are only required if you have taken at least one of the mentioned tests.
Q. I don’t have any of the test scores listed on your application. May I still apply?
A. Yes, assuming you meet the pre-requisites. We don’t require any particular test (nor do we use test scores to rank applicants). We simply require that you give us your scores for any of these tests that you have taken. But if you haven’t taken any of them, our reviewers may have less confidence that your preparation is adequate for SSP. Try to think of other ways to give them that confidence. Or, if time permits, ask your school to let you take those common college admissions tests earlier than planned (especially the SAT and TOEFL for students outside the US) so that you can include them with your SSP application.

Hi,
Could someone link me to the application? I’m assuming it has already been put online as it is the 15th of December and I’m not able to find it.

Hi! I’m applying to SSP this summer too. Are there any alumni around who can answer questions/give tips?

@Asad876 Thankyou  I forgot to read the FAQs section first…

I was concerned about getting recommendations too. My math teacher has known me for a very short time and I don’t think she likes me. My grade 10 math teacher isn’t teaching anymore, so I can’t get my recommendation from her either. Would it be fine if I got my Biology and Physics teachers to write it for me? Should I explain somewhere in my application?

bum10 char Please, can anyone answer our questions about teacher recommendations? If not, can you give us a way to contact SSP to ask the questions? I tried their email given on their website, but it’s not working.

I’m also applying this year, does any one know whether an SAT taken during January would do?
I guess sending it a few days after the deadline would be ok.
Also, does anyone here take A-Level Physics and Math? Is that as good as taking the AP in terms of applying?
I’ve studied Astronomy at a summer session in Berkeley last summer so I guess that might look well.
