They issue you a watter bottle.

Also, the shirts etc... are extremely cool. The midshipman store had really good deals as well. My son said that his running shoes were $20 there and they were pretty expensive ones. Also, he said they had great deals on knives.

darn... i dont think buying knives will go over too well on the United flight..

WP2010- you check them with your luggage.

The shirts we got are really awesome! The best one? The one that says BEAT ARMY right on the bicep! Plus, the PT gear is Under Armour and Champion's version of UA, so it's great quality, too. Also, to next year's participants, I would seriously consider bringing money for the mid-store to buy some UA, 'cause its so cheap. Where I come from, you pay like 50 bucks for a cold gear suit- they had it for like 30.

That's exactly what my son said. Also, all he wears now are the SS clothes. Fortunately, they wash well too!

Has anyone gotten their information re: CFA?

I e-mailed the admissions office about my CFA results because one of my senators wants a copy of it as part of the nomination application process. The lady from the admissions office said that they had not entered it into the computer (yet), and they do not normally give candidates a copy of the results. She said I could send them my senator's fax number, and they would fax it to him.

As for the shirts, I really like them too. The underarmor shirt is...magical. Hah. Does anyone remember what the symbols on each shirt stood for? It was printed on the sheets next to the rooms where they were stored. I've been wearing the shirts on a daily basis too (well, come to think of it, I didn't have many non-athletic clothes before those). They do wash nicely. :D

Anyways, I got an email about my CFA...

i just got back home tonight from 2 weeks of swim camp and a water polo camp that follow Summer Seminar (Session 2) which i must say was a blast...before goin i never thought of sea trials as being fun, but it was the best experience of my life. My squad BRAVO 2-3, SL Urbanski, won almost every event and "it pays to be a winner!" less PT in between!!! Everything was about teamwork and working together and my squad work extremely well together...INDOC was not as bad as i expected. I had the mission down in 10.4 sec and the ranks memorized...I was only asked what the 3rd rank in the navy was...lieutenant of course! being a girl i thought i had the whole ma'am thing under control but when a female detailer came up to me and asked if i was nervous the first thing that comes outa ur mouth is "sir no sir" with out even thinkin...ooops! she didnt make it into a big deal tho, i didnt have to name 5 differences in 5 sec like some people. The guy next to me was getting it tho bc he didnt no his ranks or the mission...it was funny he had 4 detailers up in his face at once. I wish i could go back to summer semianar again....How exciting fot all the plebes, we saw them gettting their boots and later saw them marching

during sea trials, if my squad won we still did pt. unless we had to finish the activity or whatever.

alpha 2-1

same - winning didn't really pay at all but it was a lot of fun...

charlie 2-5

Welcome back Gina...you've been down there for a while haha. Winning didnt always pay off here either, but i def. got into shape with all the PT! I also had a blast at sea trials, it was definitely a great experience. If I get appointed I will be seeing you all down there on June 28th 2006!

Bravo 2-5

i no it feels good to be home Alli!! yea all that PT also got me in shape....what was everyones favorite event during sea trials?!?!

Bravo 2-3

e-course was cool.

so was wet and sandy.

hmm i liked Han's Beach...and the muddy low crawl thing lol that was neat. E-Course was cool too. and Indoc was also a good time.

krokal, you missed the budweiser.

Summer Seminar~

My son went to SS last year and in his yearbook he wrote it was one of the top experiences he had in high school. Although ultimately he did not gain admission to USNA he says he'd do SS again in a heartbeat! He doesn't have bad feelings about the amazing process for admission and the ultimate results. He didn't hear until the beginning of the second week in April and it was agony waiting. He did gain admission to every other school he applied to and is doing Navy ROTC at an Ivy League school.

As a parent for those of you contemplating the year ahead. Make sure you have an alternative plan that you can be excited about! We know so many in our area that took two tries to get in because of the competiveness of our area. Try not to put all of your eggs in the USNA basket. There are many ways to reach your goal of being a Navy Officer! Enjoy your senior year and try not to get too caught up in the stress of the application.

Another piece of advice from our experience. Even though USNA wanted the admission packet within 30 days of receipt (his was in by June 2004) I would wait. I think his applications improved the more that he had time to ponder the whole thing. In retrospect, I believe his interview and essay would be somewhat different a little later in the year. In reality how many Juniors really know exactly what they want to do at that point. For him it became clearer as he went through the process!

Best of Luck to all Applying!!!!! JM (now graduate mom) :-)

JM: why do you think he was not admitted? It sounds like he was a qualified candidate.

Hi~

USNA is a hard place to gain admission to. My Dad and several friends we know took more than one application to be admitted. In my Dad's case (many years ago) he was given an appointment for "xyz year" and he filled the time prior taking college courses (different process more than 50 years ago). He also went to the Citadel for two years. We live in a competative state and he was part of the eye waiver pool which makes it harder to gain admission. We have to assume that was the reason as he received an immediate NROTC scholarship in the early fall of his senior year. He had very high SAT's / ACT's and was very involved in school. He playes a non school sport which may have had something to do with it but AFA and USMA reps were very interested in him because of his sport but he only wanted Navy. (Navy no longer has this as a club / varsity sport.)

In our district, at interview time we knew of at least 3 that were reapplying from the year prior, two that had enlisted after not gaining admission last year, one at NAPS and of the other candidates, several were women and more than one had very strong ties to the Academy. (Parents had worked at USNA in the past.) He was told from the beginning (there has been much debate about this on this site.) that his biggest barrier was that he is a cauc. male from a competative state.

Don't give up hope. He has great other plans that he is excited about and isn't going to make a final decision until a little later in the fall about reapplication. We don't think he will reapply though. There are benefits to both types of education and he can still travel abroad (do a semester away) with NROTC and will end up with the same commisioning. He's busy now meeting NROTC friends from across the world...it's amazing, picking out things for his dorm and getting ready for NROTC. He's happy and in the end that's all that matters! It is so easy to get caught up in the process. I think his biggest disappointment is the tradition of USNA and he would have really liked to be a part of that...not that there isn't tradition at the IVY Leagues but he really likes USNA tradition and will always be a fan!

Best of Luck! JM
