Summer Session: Smart or Not?

The preferences, orientation date and paperwork process has only just begun and all ready my son is itching to take Summer Session 2 classes. He wants to begin fulfilling requirements and familiarize himself with the campus before the fall session starts.

Does anyone know if there will be other summer students also staying on campus and if there will be activities geared toward these same students? He did Summer at Brown last year and had a wonderful time, but I'm pretty sure Stony Brook's summer session will be nothing like that experience. This is, afterall, the real thing.

I took two summer classes last year, and there was one scheduled event with information about the campus and free food at the beginning of Summer Session I. Other than that, there were no scheduled student life events during the summer. Most of the students who live on campus during the summer will not be freshmen.

It is a great idea to attend to get familiar with the campus and see what classes are like, but I hope your son doesn’t get discouraged with the lack of student life (and lack of students). There are TONS more students, club meetings and lots of free events/activities for freshmen once the fall semester starts.

Priority housing assignments go to those who have completed the application before May 6th, so you may want to do that soon to make sure your son gets a room.

Thanks for the info, shorelines. He doesn’t seem too concerned about the social life. He’ll be a Biology major and is on the pre-med track, and wants to get acclimated so that he won’t be too overwhelmed when the fall semester starts.
