I'm considering participating in one of the summer sessions this year and I noticed that Session D starts on July 2nd while Session E starts on July 23rd but both end on August 10th. Does anyone know why Session E is so much shorter than the others? Are you still able to take a complete course in this three week window?

Also, I'm planning on going into engineering (undecided, possible chemical or engineering physics) and am not sure of a good class to take if I do a summer session. Note: I'll have credit for Math 1A so my first required math class will be 1B.

Thank you!

Yes, you can still take complete classes in the three-week window. It’s just that those classes tend to be only 1 or 2 units. If it’s 3 units, be prepared to have more than 3 hours of class a day. I don’t really know why they have three-week classes, but I’m guessing it’s for small major/breadth requirements. You definitely won’t see any big, core classes there.

Math 1B is a good class to take in summer (so are 53 and 54). And maybe Chem 1A as well.

Ok that makes sense. I actually have to take Chem 4A instead so I think I’d rather have a whole semester for that one.

Yeah, Chem 4A is only offered in the fall anyway Are you thinking of taking any other classes? Perhaps an R&C class? Two classes in one session are pretty normal, and should actually give you good preparation for an engineering workload at Berkeley.

Yeah I was definitely think of taking a R&C class as well. During the summer session, do you live in the same dorm that you’ll live in during the school year?

You might live in the same dorm, you might not. In summer you live in Unit 2 (if you choose dorms; subletting an apartment is probably cheaper, actually). During the school year you might live in Unit 2 as well, or in one of the other dorms… depends on what you get allocated to during the balloting exercise.

One more question… I’m taking the AP Calculus AB test this May. Will I still be able to take Math 1B during the summer (has prerequisite of Calculus AB score or Math 1A) if my AP score is not yet known? I’m 99% sure I’ll get a 4 or 5 on the AP test but would I still be allowed to register for 1B during the summer?

Good question. I really have no idea… you should ask. Have you taken Calc AB by any chance? If you have (and gotten a 4/5) you will definitely be able to.

I think they’ll let you register, and then it’s up to your GSI whether he feels like kicking you out of the class. Chances are, you’ll be able to sneak your way in. I have friends who have taken classes they don’t have the prerequisite for, both in summer and during the normal school year.
