Hi CC,
I am hoping to become an engineer or math teacher, and I have been considering getting a minor in Spanish. I love the culture and the language. I’m even considering self studying it over the summer while I also study the ACT.
I’ve looked at summer immersion programs mainly South and Central America (ie. Costa Rica, Mexico, and others in that area) but the cost is SO expensive! The ones of them I am particularly interested in are focused around language learning and community service. Do summer programs like this usually offer aid or a scholarship of some kind?
There are also programs in the U.S. that are definitely less expensive but still expand my knowledge of Spanish and culture in the countries that speak it. One even offers high school language credit, so instead of being in Spanish lll next year, I would be in Spanish lV. (Which is nice because then I would be able to take AP Spanish my senior year.)
However, these programs also don’t offer the amazing community service opportunities, which is something very important to me. This also would showcase more of a seriousness and love for a culture than a program in the U.S. I feel. I hope to teach math in Latin America in the summer if I choose to be a teacher.
If anyone knows of anything like this that is fairly inexpensive, or has any advice, please feel free to comment down below!
