Summer stock auditions

In a “find out after the fact category, for summer stock auditions & screenings, I was not aware that several of what would be considered “top tier” MT schools actually have the great opportunity of having summer stock theatre companies that audition the kids on their respective campus. This is such a great thing & an obvious perk of attending said school as the kids just go right there for the audition or screening. They don’t have to arrange travel etc to the main audition locations. For example for the new A1 auditions they travel to many of the more I guess well known schools & also it appears other companies do this. I did not know this last year & I guess that’s another perk of attending those schools. Of course if you don’t get admitted to them it doesn’t matter but it’s interesting just the same. It sure would make getting a summer stock job a LOT easier.

@theaterwork - I believe the A1 auditions on campus are live prescreens, not final auditions. If accepted the students would Still have to travel to New York in January for the actual auditions in front of companies

It really does help when it comes to summer stock auditions! It kind of stinks when your kid is at a program that doesn’t do that, but it might be beneficial to list groups and theatre companies that come to campus to audition. I’ll start with A1.

I like it that A1 posts their audition locations and allows students from different universities to audition. So if A1 is not coming to a student’s campus, at least a student has the option to drive to a the nearest audition site campus if they want to do an in-person audition. (Also, A1 may be adding additional location sites – heard they may be coming to Kentucky and Illinois . . .)

Apparently, A1 has already seen over 1600 prescreens. And, I think my daughter said last year they saw something like 300-400 in total. :open_mouth:

I wonder how many kids they are taking for the final auditions in NYC

BTW- there is an NYC prescreen not listed on @zebracocoa 's list above - Nov 7th (I imagine it to cover all the NYC schools since they don’t seem to be doing something specific to Pace, NYU, Marymount, Cap21 etc)

No idea. They just say “far fewer.”

@janne006 actually that is not accurate that you can just attend a screening at a university close by if they aren’t coming to yours… my daughter asked if she could attend a schools screening in the same state her school is in , since it was nearby & they weren’t attending her school. They said no. They will only screen kids who attend that university that they’re visiting. When asked why they told her it was for some reason I can’t recall. I remember thinking it didn’t make sense to me but whatever. Her only option was to send in the video screening or attend one of the screenings in NYC, FL etc that are not campus specific.( So if you don’t attend Syracuse for example, you cannot attend that prescreen . )

And yes @toowonderful you are correct those campus sites are all live prescreen, not final auditions.

So you are getting a prescreen benefit, but not necessarily a casting benefit by attending one of the schools A1 is visiting

@theaterwork We added it to one of the college questions!!

@theaterwork Thank you for that clarification – I made that assumption from the application – that’s disappointing. I’m glad you spoke up because that is not clear from the application or the FAQ. At least there is still the video submission option. Thanks!

Yes @toowonderful I agree you are only getting a pre screening benefit , not a casting benefit from attending one of the schools that A1 is visiting but that’s a pretty big benefit I would say. to use my daughter as an example, she is considering the video submission but is always of the opinion a live prescreen is better. Therefore the only live one she can attend is NYC or FL , AL etc & that is not logistically possible for her right now. If they were visiting her school it would be a benefit to proceeding in the process. She is fine w/ sitting this one out this year anyway as a freshman but I just wanted to bring up something that might be helpful in that “questions you would never think of asking” category. Especially if these A1 auditions become a major player in the summer stock process which they appear to be.

I agree - it is a HUGE benefit to get to prescreen on campus. @theaterwork - maybe your D can suggest it to the head of her program? BW did a live prescreen and they also get some summer stock and regional theaters on campus for interview rounds. It saves time and money!

On-campus Wagon Wheel auditions:

Florida State Feb. 18-22nd
University of Michigan March 10th

Wagon Wheel also auditions at Western Michigan U on March 11.

Hello! Has anyone D or S heard back from MTWichita Theatre for their audition appt.? Specifically, Chicago, Feb. 23-25? The applications went live Jan. 3rd but say they are now closed until possibly Jan. 22. Do you think if my S hasn’t heard back by now, he wasn’t selected or still too early? Their email said they won’t respond if not selected… so since it’s his first time applying and no one else at his school seems to know, we were wondering. He also has Midwest that weekend and honestly can’t do both plus Wagon Wheel that weekend. Wish they didn’t schedule all in the same weekend!! Makes it difficult. Thank you!
