Summer Stock Theatre Auditions

@mom4bwayboy‌ - we were at OTA Sunday too!

How’d it go @mommabears26‌? Despite being ill the night before, my S “survived” and had a terrific learning experience - landed a few callbacks and even an "offer’. The OTA was so nicely geared to “newbies”, but also some nice midwest “plums” for the more experienced. After seeing what it’s all about, S will be MUCH better prepared for the next one.

It went pretty well too actually. My D was also sick the previous 2 days (and had to 2 do BIG college auditions while sick). This was her first audition like this. She ended up with 2 callbacks and most likely an “offer” - but she needs to figure out what college she is attending in the fall so she knows when they start and can tell them her availability. They were very nice - it was a great experience. I highly recommend people try it out.

Sorry to hear your D was sick for her BIG auditions, but is at least feeling better now. Hope all turns out well - both college and OTA-wise.

Had not the greatest experience at SETC, but just went to the Ohio Theater one this past weekend and had two theater groups ask for more information, head shots, etc. Before this my D had already landed a job with a local professional group for their production of Jesus Christ Superstar so she knows she’ll be a paid performer at elast part of the summer.

OTAs are a great starter unified for Summer Stocks. They have a few really reputable houses like The Barn, Porthouse, and Huron while having some great year round gigs like CCT, too.

Your college aged student should attend one unified per year. OTA, SETC, Strawhat…and then as a senior - UPTA

What does OTA stand for?

Ohio Theater Auditions?

Ohio Theatre Alliance - they also refer to it as the North Central Regional Audition

Hopefully next year for son, though he had rehearsal for a play this past Saturday when OTAs were held. I wonder how the schools handle it if a student wants to audition but is in the midst of rehearsals?

S was swing for a show performance in the fall that conflicted with SETC prescreen date in the “correct” state. S contacted SETC to see if he could attend another date - which was actually a shorter drive - and they were agreeable to the switch. (Turns out all the students performing in that show also changed dates en masse and SETC was OK with that as long as they all submitted everything at same time). The “switched” date then conflicted with S’s commitment to do tech for school play. Again contacted SETC to request earliest possible Sunday prescreen and got a “yes”. Simultaneously asked director of show if he could come late to final matinee performance. Director was not particularly happy (S’s only job was to hang up one costume item midway through show), but said “yes” as long as he was present for set strike. S arrived in prescreen town the night before, did early audition, hopped in car and drove 4 1/2 hours to school - just in time to hang up costume item. I helped coach S through all the possible scenarios and who he would need to contact, but left it up to him. My feeling is that in this career path they will need to learn the fine art of negotiation, compromise and timely communication ASAP. Their lives will be an ongoing jigsaw puzzle of fitting shows, jobs, and auditions into overlapping time slots. Never too early to learn the fine art of making polite requests.

S auditioned for Cortland Repertory Theatre, Cortland NY yesterday. Auditions were held at a school in Homer NY. He really enjoyed this audition, said they were all so nice and supportive. Long drive from Westerville OH to Homer NY, especially with the snow coming down YIKES. He felt the drive was 100% worth the experience.

Well, my S had his audition for Pittsburgh CLO, today, unfortunately he did not get a call back, but during the time he was there (approx. 2 hours) only 1 person received a call back. He did get an opportunity to sing both of his songs, which most who auditioned did not and the only comment he received was, that’s a vocal range we don’t hear anymore… he was happy and felt he gave a good audition (and this was his first professional audition) with many more to come. On to Strawhat auditions in 2 weeks

@entertainersmom, in general I would say that you NEVER miss a rehearsal for an audition unless you have stated up front that the audition was already scheduled, so the director can decide if they want to cast you and work around it.

^That’s what I would think too Calliene. Son’s school has a play and musical in the fall, and a play and musical in the Spring semester. A student doesn’t know if he is cast for the Spring semester productions until December, so the student would have probably done many applications/pre-screens for the various auditions already. Mom4bwayboy’s son did a great job of juggling his responsibilities

My son is at PCLO this weekend. Audition is tomorrow morning. His school usually works with you so you are able to audition but have, in the past, not allowed some to miss rehearsal in order to audition.

Break a leg, lojosmo’s S!!

@lojosmo … break a leg at PCLO… keep us posted about his audition

Summer is starting to feel like college all over again. Has anyone else’s child applied for some of these emc point apprenticeships and if so have you heard back yet? Anyone heard back from NETC yet?
