Terrific news @crc500! Such a great theatre. I’m loving all the casting/tech updates on the CCU Facebook page.
@austinmtmom - They do an incredible job celebrating the success of students and faculty on social media!
S has booked a summer gig at Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre.
Congrats to your S @MTDadandProud? My S was there two summers ago. Terrific experience. Looks like an awesome season this year.
@TNMTDAD Did your Daughter end up going to Twin Cities Auditions? What did she think?
@MTDadandProud what show did your S audition to do or did he get to be in all the shows at Shenandoah SMT? I ask because we live near there and go to shows every summer. It is a great season this year. Also my D is applying for the performance internship for graduating high school students. She applied to work the Hairspray show. We arent sure if she will be admitted to it yet as she hasn’t auditioned yet.
@janne006, no she didn’t. It fell on the heels of Spring Break for her, and she didn’t want to go back two days early. However, all of her peers who went got called back at least once, some several. We did end up doing two different video submissions over the break. It turns out that some of the theaters at TCUTA actually had good summer seasons, but there was no way to know that because they never updated their websites. All of this is still such a learning process. Summer Stock is sooo freaking competitive, especially for girls. It is hard to land a gig because many of the companies re-hire people that have worked with them before. Tough to break in. But, we feel like we got pretty close, so we will try again. Next year, we will add a few more auditions.
@TNMTDAD Thanks for the info on TCUTA. I’m glad your Daughter’s friends had some callbacks. And, yes, it would have been nice to know that some summer companies would be in attendance. It just wasn’t worth airfare, hotel, and rental car costs this year. I definitely echo your sentiments about the fierce competition for roles! This is a tough industry our kids are joining!
OMG! D just landed her first professional gig. She will be playing Suzy in the Marvelous Wonderettes at Paul Bunyan Playhouse. Video submission. Go figure! Proud Papi here.
@TNMTDAD Awesome! That is such great news for your Daughter! I am so glad to see that kids can get jobs through video auditions! I hope she has a terrific summer – and what a good role!
Thank you, @janne006. Who knew about video submissions? But, it seems like it is widely accepted.
S will be headed to BigFork in Montana this summer! A few days after SETC he was offered lead in one show, supporting in a second and ensemble in the other two - they run a rotating rep of four shows for most of the summer. When he received the offer, we were just as clueless as those of you who were asking after MWTA callbacks (they also attended Twin Cities and UPTA, I believe). After following several trails with someone who knows someone who knows someone (thanks CCers!) we found out they have an excellent reputation (one “tell” was that many of the actors and crew return for multiple summers) and I don’t think anyone can beat the local geography. FB posts make it look a little like sleep-away summer camp with many hours of hard work thrown in. Perhaps next year, we can be the “someone” someone knows.
A great way to see how folks like working at theaters is to go check out gig and tell on auditionupdate.com
Gig and tell is a good resource if the venue you’re interested in has been commented on by several people. But many of the venues have no reviews (ex. BigFork), or sometimes only one by a very disgruntled ex-employee - who may, or may not be an outlier. Always nice to get multiple viewpoints if available.
Heard great things about Big Fork, D has several friends who have been there multiple summers- and a friend who will be heading there for the first time!
My D landed a summer stock “season” with a leading role in one show and then supporting/ensemble roles in the other shows. I am not allowed to say where yet, because the final company casting hasn’t been announced, but I am so thrilled for her to book paying work!!! Woo Hoo! She booked from StrawHats and this was her first time auditioning there. She is beyond excited, and she will be just under 2 hours from home, so I will actually get to see her perform!
Wow! After thinking his possibilities of being hired over the summer was over, What do you know!! (He forgot that his last month audition (in Chicago) said they would let them know by April 15th if cast.) My S ended up booking 2 lead roles in 2 musicals and received the call last night! He is beyond excited as it’s his first time auditioning for summer stock and now can add two great shows to his resume! So you just never know!
